Was let go along with a few of my colleagues. I was not expecting anything different from management. Sent my stupid worthless laptop they think is more precious than people. Hope everyone is doing well. I have 2 kids and it hurts me to see them in their eyes to say Daddy is not working today

@j5 My laptop was over 7 years old. It never gave me any issues so I didn't replace it. I can't estimate how little it's worth. I would expect it to be scrapped given its age, but the truth is that once I shipped it back I got some closure, as I no longer saw it sitting on my desk anymore.
Interesting how they value a pound and a half of plastic and silicone than a living breathing person.
Spend that new found time with your kids. Take them anywhere. Do anything with them. If short on money, tap the retirement (IRA) if you have it. Long as you take the fed and state tax out, easy peasy. Really try and enjoy non-desk, non-sitting time. As someone said, dive back into LIFE.
Brother your kids just want to see and spend time with you. They would probably prefer you not work, but until AI forces us to the sidelines, this is the world we live in. Hope you are able to enjoy some time with your kids that you never would have otherwise.
Hey, nothing to be ashamed of in front of your kids, if anything think of the time you are getting to spend with them, compared to all those absent parents that never see their kids because they are obsessed with work/career. No parent on their deathbed ever says they wished they worked more - instead they wish they'd spent more time with their kids. Enjoy the time off, take them to school, pick them up from school, sit with them help with homework/studying, take them outside and toss a ball or go for a walk. Enjoy your life with your family, because your time here on earth is finite.
@aj totally agree. Layoff was the decision made by corp which you have no control. The only thing we can manage is how we handle this situation. Never doubt about yourself since this is not about your ability, but the Corp balance sheet. With calmness, difficulty can be overcome with your focused effort. I am from other industry, I took a few weeks to figure out what I want to do, then immediately decided to take exam for project management which I have thought about before. Fully focusing on 2 months, which helped me shifting the focus to routine scheduled learning. I gained confidence throughout this journey. Then prepare job applications and sharpen my interview skills. Once your head is clear, you will find this might be a new opportunity in your life. Cheer up, it is not end of the world. It was a job.... Best wishes to all!
We are on the same boat, and there is no point in trying to decipher “why me?” For all practical purposes it’s like someone tossed a dice and our number came up. If you’re not doing so, try to keep a daily routine (gym, library, run errands, look at your finances and job search, spend time with family, and so on) so your kids don’t just see you at home all the time. Soon they will understand your life isn’t just work. Anyway, Stay strong and hopefully a year from now we all will end up seeing the layoff as a blessing in disguise.
I am sorry mate, I am also in the same boat. I was the only one in my team and probably the product and cannot comprehend why am i. I worked hard, obeyed what's said but still it happened. Anyways life goes on and remember there is a morning after night
