100k H1B Visa fee

The president just signed an EO adding a 100K fee to the H1B Visa application, per year. Is that per position or per hiring company? Amazon had 10,000+ of these Visas last year. Does that mean we will see more job openings in tech?

This XO is just one more domino to fall since NAFTA was signed Dec1992.

Big Tech CEOs are BFFs with the president, don't they already know this is coming? Therefore it is probably just a hollow gesture, as you posters have well explained.

I’m in some sympathy with this Executive Order. Certainly I would have made more money if H1-Bs had not been allowed. BUT…

1) Congress only authorized the President to charge fees to cover the expenses of the Visa — not fees of $100,000. This XO is illegal, so Big Tech will take it to court and get it struck down pretty quickly.

2) The policy is inconsistent. The Administration says they want Americans to have good jobs, but they are making massive cuts to education and research. It’s educated Americans, not ignorant ones, who create and get good jobs.

The fee is $100K/person/year and it applies to new applicants, not to people who already have their H1B. It is expected to open more tech jobs to Americans if it holds because Big Tech will certainly kick and scream.

Unfortunately, the executive order doesn't do much. It only applies to those trying to come into the country. Those already in the country via F1 student visa can apply for H1B jobs and no one has to pay $100,000. Also, the O1 visa jobs have NO limit and they only have to pay $530 application fee. There is also OPT which allows a company to hire someone for 24 months. Most H1B applicants are already in USA and most that apply for American jobs and get those H1B jobs are those graduating students who are on F1 visa. Another words, there is no stopping of foreigners from taking American jobs. Our American college graduates have lots of competition from Foreign Students graduating from US colleges. The only way to give American jobs to Americans and American graduates is to fine billions of dollars on those corporations profiting from hiring foreign students and foreign workers already on US soil. Congress has to change the H1B, O1, OPT laws.
