Here are the numbers you need to understand the effects of the $100,000 fee for H1-B visas:

Right now fees for these visas can run up to about $6,000-$10,000 depending on processing, so this is a huge change

The visa cap for FY2025 was 65,000 regular visas and 20,000 visas for workers with special expertise; this cap was reached in early December 2024

There are probably about 700,000 people on H1-B visas in the United States right now, though exact figures are not available

71% of applications in FY2024 were for workers from India, and 12% from China

64% of applications in FY2024 were in "computer-related" occupations, with typical salaries around $120,000

Renewals make up about 2/3 of applications, and it's not clear whether this fee will apply to renewals

The leading users of the program were Amazon, Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Google

The costs implied by the new fees under these companies' current usage of the visas could range from about $1 billion for Amazon down to $400 million for Google

If H1-B workers send, say, 20% of their earnings home, remittances to India alone could be in the range of $12 billion per year

Your brave President Trump hear you!
‘Let’s burn the H-1B policy,’ netizens call to end visa program over Indian envoy’s Russian oil remark
India’s continued purchase of Russian oil despite US pressure has sparked outrage on social media, with netizens calling for the H-1B visa program to be scrapped. Critics argue India's stance could strain US-India relations, especially in the tech sector where Indian professionals dominate H-1B allocations.
