Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Going to expensive to import workers.

Sept 19 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose a new $100,000 application fee for H-1B worker visas, a White House official said, potentially dealing a big blow to the technology sector that relies heavily on skilled workers from India and China.

Tons of people down south the border are getting degrees or certifications so that they can work for an outsourcing company that does work for an American company. They literally count on us to provide job opportunities and a good standard of living for themselves. A lot of American corporation are now opening office so that they can near-shore. The new trend is, "oh, more convenient time zones".

Are we supposed to continue to export our jobs and provide opportunities for the entire world while the American middle class is being crashed (and trashed)?

To the gentleman talking to Congress. Please look into this new accelerating trend and let them know what's going on. They are very sneaky and say, well, if they are looking over here, let's go silently over there.

Offshoring is a short term money saver, but these folks being hired don't have the same skin in the game, the same culture, work quality, and knowledge. Slowly, the products degrade. The code they write is s h I t.

@d5 you’re on the money. AT&T already on this. Satellite offices actively being looked and at and locked in the last 90 days.

The Trump administration needs to nix the tax break for these tech companies. Maybe we are better off without the AT&T's in this world if they cannot compete without gouging American workers. Failure is a great teacher.

Trump has a knee je-k response to most problems he is faced with. The common denominator with H1B and illegal immigrants is employment, the businesses involved in supporting these. Hold the businesses accountable and both problems are significantly reduced. It isn't rocket science.

PLEASE TALK TO THEM ABOUT OFFSHORING AND NEAR-SHORING!!!!!!

It's India, but not only. They are now near-shoring more: Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. TONS of tech jobs are now being moved down south TOO.

Fixing the H1B problem is great, second step needs to be the huge amount of jobs being exported.

Thank you for what you are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And those useless people in foreign worker organization at AT&T should get a real job. Maybe running fiber optic cables or selling telecom service

As a citizen, I prefer having people here, legally of course, haven them spend money here, make them pay taxes, make them contribute to social security and grow this economy. I would not feel comfortable if this move forces employers to contribute to growing satellite locations around the globe and grow the economy of the country that they will be exporting these jobs to.

Even if tariffs are imposed on offshoring, it cannot be applied to subsidiaries. What most companies here have are subsidiaries.

This action will likely result in a different negative impact on jobs and the economy. Were I a business owner facing this extortive fee I would simply move the work offshore. Much of what Trump mandates does not pan out the way he says it will, not even close.

@cy did you forget ATT have offices/ virtual around the world meeting the req of each country? It will not be considered as offshoring !

About to be a lot of jobs opening up. Stanks is going to have to reverse course as what’s left of his talent hits to road for greener pastures. The contracting companies won’t be able to afford it either; so there goes that. Sure they will try to work that offshore loophole, but they are cracking down on that too. It was just posted last week there was going to be a tax on any offshoring, What was it? A 30% extra tax and they couldn’t write it off? I don’t see how this is a bad thing for US workers that have seen jobs vanish and wages stagnant for decades now.

Don't celebrate just yet. We all know that our favorite telecom has a workaround to double down on Andox or Techmihendra or just go full steam ahead with their center of excellence in India. If you are not chasing after your elected leaders social media threads then the fake news media is just going to keep pumping their lies on the topic. We still have lots of work to do. The job numbers are going to get much worse from her on out. By the end of Q1 2026 it's going to be full panic mode. I hate to point this out, but the lowering of interest rates is not going to fix the pending problem that is incoming. Paul Volcker made the exact same moves in the late 70's and it failed. All things considered, unless we can return stability to AMERICAN JOBS, and get even deeper tax cuts that target the middle class we are doomed. Reagan found that out when Volcker failed, and it was his middle class tax cuts that turned around the stagflation that was creeping into the early 80's.

There are too many ways around this. It will usher in a whole new round of sub-contracting everything out to other companies, who happen to be non-US based, and therefore exempt from this tax. Poof, problem solved. See: Tech Mahindra, Rakuten etc.

we need $100K per offshore employee and $300K per US based employee annually, not just the upfront fee. That'll prove out who's really extra qualified.

@OP As others have pointed out, the damage has been done. To make this meaningful it would have to be retroactive and probably closer to 300,000 . That’s never going to happen, but that’s what it would take.

I've talked to dozens of senators on the hill about this over the past 5 months pointing out that this really needs to be retroactive and designated as a tax. I'm also pushing to have a passthrough tax to tech companies and telecoms to pick up directly recognizing that they are using these H1B's as cheap transitory labor while they lay off older skilled workers. Stay tuned for more, I'm going to keep pushing. This is going to cost the telecomm WAY more than it would have cost them to keep me to a proper retirement as opposed to letting me go four months before my rule of 75. I am looking for a Lot more changes to this H1B game, and remember we are not even a year into the Trump second term. I can't stress enough how important it is to stalk your local elected representatives to push for support on a much higher taxation on these H1B's and any American company that is publicly traded to have external taxes on all off shore labor. Keep fighting, this has only begun and there is a lot of support on the hill. You should hear the jokes we tell about our favorite telecoms lobbyist . he is a tool and everyone on the hill knows it.

Very good move. We will be in demand now. Basic qualifications for a tech job? Bug tummy, 50+ with bald head, wearing a baseball cap will be preferable. Ability to yap endlessly on conference calls will be valued again. Did I say work will be optional?

Trump doesn’t give a fu-k about working people . He used them by feeding lies , after lies.
