Punish first, play favorites second, repeat. After a while I stopped thinking of this as a career and started seeing it for what it is: a place where it's all about surviving another day without getting crushed.

You work with that person also?!! I wonder if same business unit or just prevalent @$$ki$$ strategy. It took the ALL work culture to get to of this phenomenon of individuals that elevate this play to art - it must be exhausting to continually learn about hobbies you have no interest in because you substitute it for merit.
Facts.
Used to be decent place to work with friendly faces…now everyone’s just about numbers and goals.
Boot lickers grow their careers at a faster pace than those actually doing the work. Hence the reason incompetent leaders have to steal the work of their subordinates, all in the name of collaboration of course.
Perhaps..The way to characterize the actual condition is…. way too junior leaders, legacy thinkers that are generation agnostic, risk avoiders and too few know what’s requires to transform a business model.
The @$$ ki$$!ng does sure get laid on thick by certain employees.
And it works. Do yourself favor build your own brand and don’t revert to it, but be prepared for lot eye rolling and justified groaning which we can do remotely now thankfully.
