Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

Managers

Part of being a good manager is knowing when to call it quits. Lots of these managers are just riding their time out and the problem with this is they aren't taking care of their people or making a positive impact on anything or anyone. Time to move out if you are in this boat. Open opportunities up for others.

@fh I'm a former T-Mo employee who left long ago then, later, returned as an NTW/Individual Contributor (IC). Approximately 18 months ago, my T-Mo manager -- who was respected by his leadership, team members, peers, and internal customers -- was offered a demotion to IC or a severance package. He took the former.

Last month, he was laid off. As many here know, this story is not a one-off anecdote. It's what T-Mo has become and one of the primary reasons why managers struggle to remain motivated.

'People Management' is just near non-existent in an environment where there is little to no hope of advancement. Every pay raise now just makes you a more likely target to being laid off. The management will just lie to your face and tell you everything is awesome then hand you a box for your stuff a week later

The challenge the mid level managers face is that they were encouraged to move up and grow their careers, while they were great technical people. The company takes no accountability for creating new positions, teams ans divisions, only to deem them "redundant" in less than 2 years in many cases. Many great people were caught in this irresponsible change process.

@fp I know there are still good TMO managers out there and that’s the point. Without the support of those above you, you simply cannot do your job properly. It starts from the top down. The brass has been destroying morale at every level. Good lower level leaders are systematically removed.

@fh I fought for my team and got the boot anyway. Likely because I was fighting for my team and came to loggerheads with my Director, who didn't care about the IC's.

Part of being a good manager is also fighting for your team and ICs. This is something I rarely have seen in last several years.

You must be speaking of those mid-level managers, no need to mention area. They seem to be just there not doing much.
