Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

If you are under 40 runaway from this place

Longer you stay rustier you become.
And they treat you bad and may let go any day.
Even if you make it to MR75 no benefits and even harder to get out.
Cash out your meager pension on the way out. Better use it to get debt free.
Explore options to buy your own insurance.
Live below your means, get debt free , update your skills, invest in indexed funds and get outta here.

I would suggest staying at AT&T under 40 only if you have no degree and no demonstrated skills or creativity. It is a place where the marginally talented with little education can excel as it is the equivalent to an extermination camp in the 40s. In such environments, your skills are actually cherished as you have no self respect and cannot do any better. That is a large portion of their work force.

Yes run away. At least until I retire. I don't want to be replaced by a younger worker who may have more modern skills. I'm still holding on though.

You must think that AT&T "leadership" values you. You are in for a most unpleasant surprise.

I started working on copper and I’m going to retire working on copper. I’m not doing anything with fiber. I don’t understand it.

I'm fortunate to have had a manager when I first started with SWBT tell me to max out my 401k. I did, and this Gen X will retire real nice in my early 50's.
SSI will be fun money when I'm eligible.

“ That number will go up dramatically as the Boomers and GenX retire over the next ten years.”

I’m betting Gen X retires before the Boomers. Most Gen X are retiring in their 50s, while the Boomers continue to work for some reason even though most are well past retirement and SSI eligible.

Currently there is a shortage of over 400,000 trade jobs in the country available for those who want a well paying sustainable career. That number will go up dramatically as the Boomers and GenX retire over the next ten years. There also is also a shortage in the healthcare and assistance services due to so many retiring and aging.

It is very hard to find jobs these days, even for 40 and under. You will see it everywhere. T knows it thats why they can afford to mistreat you worse than anything. The good thing is you are still employed and getting paid. Do the bare minimum, do not let all the drama and toxicity affect you anymore. Buy a good noise-canceling headset and listen to good music. Cancel out everything. This is how you will survive in this environment. Do not disagree with your boss, do not try to do anything, just come in, find a seat, do your job and go home.

Maybe if the ones with over forty years of service who feel entitled and are just barely working could be paid to leave and go to the house we could have a younger team willing to learn and improve we’d lessen the negative culture.! Let’s not get started with ones with 50 years of service,

Young people don't want to work for your glorified utility provider company? Lets slap a corporate buzzword on it, like "market-based culture" and spin it as a good thing!

People hate on boomers for the way they conduct themselves, the fact that most politicians are boomers, and the economic environment we’ve found ourselves in due to the choices that generation has made.

That being said, hating on someone just because they’re over 40 is crazy - some millennials are approaching 40 and these are highly competent technical people with masters degrees, PhD’s, computer science degrees.

Just because someone is 40 doesn’t mean their career is over in a technical space.

New employees haven’t had pension for at least the past 10 years. Pensions were eliminated under Randall. That’s a big reason you don’t see many younger employees or they don’t stay long. Why would they unless they are climbing the ladder.

Don’t worry, all the Gen Z new hires will show the AT&T Execs what it really means to have NO Loyalty. Revolving doors and incessant Churn. BUH-Bye 👋🏽
