Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

Dell vs HPE

My husband was laid off from Dell (back in July) after 10 years there, but was recently offered a similar role at HPE, and for better pay than what he was making at Dell (in sales).

My concern is HPE will just be more of the same, understaffed, overworked, and with just as much risk of another layoff as Dell.

Does anyone have any advice or experience going from Dell to HPE that might make me feel better about him taking this offer? He has another potential offer from another smaller company, but it doesn’t pay as well. But I’m thinking it might be worth it to work at a smaller place that might be less stressful on him.

He says it’s better to take the offer he has that’s for sure and for more money, but after reading the posts here, it makes me nervous he’s going from the oven to the frying pan.

Believe it or not, HPE is a better company than Dell but not by much. Currently, HPE is a rudderless ship and I don't expect that to change until HPE gets an upgrade at the CEO position.
The truth is that both Dell and HPE are shipping commodity products and upper management is trying to offshore as much work as they can.
My advice is to try to get a job at Nvidia or AMD. Those companies are still innovating.

@132 he took the HPE role, he really liked the manager he’d be working with and he’s going to be making more than Dell was paying, we didn’t realize Dell was known for underpaying. He starts September! Hopefully this gives some hope out there to everyone else, places are hiring.

Don't look to deep into the negative comments here. Many of those are either laid off, worried about being laid off and just want to vent "HPE su-ks". Every team @ HPE is going to be different, so he should interview around and see where he thinks he'll be a great fit and enjoy the job. I'd pick an enjoyable job over a high-paying one if I'm not in a dire financial situation.

@ac The Compaq legacy Proliant is still best in class. Dell with their EMC merger is just a sc--wdriver shop selling "servers". HPE as a company does S--K. Dell appears to be better.

Let’s get this out of the way: Corporate America su-ks. It does not care about people; it only cares about profit and the shareholders. So, with this in mind, we are really talking about the least awful choice. Having worked at that Hades hole known as Dell, I can tell you HPE is somewhat better. It is a little more human and there is some effort to remember people work for the company. It is not fabulous, but as far as Corp America goes, it is okay. Your hubby should take the job, get what he can and look for something better. Whatever he does, he should leave his heart and soul at home.

Smaller companies are just as risky, but in different ways.
A smaller (tech) company is typically privately funded by PE firms. If a small tech company isn't hitting their targets PE firms who are the major investors will often demand opex cuts and reorgs which normally come with a level of layoffs before they will fund another round. Larger companies tend to have a bit more runway in terms of time to turn things around then a smaller company. Both types of companies have different types of stress. "A bird in the hand".
In my opinion I would take the higher paying sure thing.

Better to be employed and then if unhappy look for another job when you have a job.
Honestly if your husband is over 40 (the average age most Tech employees get laid off the first time) and has a job offer in hand, he should take it. Lots of people on this site are looking for work..and would love to be in your husband's position. He needs to take the gig and (I seriously mean no offense) you are being short sited..the economy is going south, to what degree we don't know but better to be employed than weather the storm without a job.

take the gig for what it’s worth. He will never be allowed to hit his on target earnings but it beats unemployment. I’ve worked for both companies. HPE is just a disorganized smaller version of Dell with better products and worse management (if you can believe that).

Small companies come with its own level of stress. I've worked at companies that have 20 employees to 100K+, and its all different. Smaller places usually do not have the resources that he may be used to, but also are much more nimble. Depends on the ownership as well. If its run by a tyrant that see's no other way to do the job than his way (rest in peace Dad) its just as stressful. But there are also advantages. Money is not everything, but if it makes enough to pay the bills with a bit left over, its not a bad move. Also gives another line on the resume, and if he is lucky, will learn from those there, and hopefully teach as well.
