Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Serious question: what happens if you just…quit?

I work in a back office operation (50K-plus, no bonus, no client facing). If I just up and quit with no notice (other than on the day via letter, per se), there’s nothing they can do, right? What happens if you quit BEFORE using any vacation days? I am quitting with a view toward retirement/no more work.

I put in my notice a couple months ago and I had to give one month notice.

Honestly, it was great. It was a very easy and relaxed month of getting paid… I did the least amount possible and only went in once and that was to turn in my cr-ppy computer.

Word of warning… Not only do you not get paid out for your accrued but unused vacation time, if you have a lot accrued, they will try to keep you from using it during your notice.

Ridiculous… But I shouldn’t have been surprised, but for some reason I still was

I was one of these people that kept sticking around thinking things will get better because I was afraid of the unknown… And I figured if I got let go I would get a nice severance… Finally this year with the help of my wife I woke the he-l up and realized it was never going to get better and I worked hard on an exit strategy.

I think I started thinking every place treated you like this dump… I can honestly say the grass is greener…

I know everybody can’t, but if you can, instead of spending your free time working for free for this place that doesn’t appreciate you, work your 40 hours and the additional time spend on your exit… Whether it’s a second job for extra income or job hunting.

Why dont you just stop showing up and see what happens? Maybe they will lay you off, or more likely they won't notice or you will be promoted.

You will only get paid for unused purchased vacation unless you’re in a state that requires vacation payout. Any accrued and unused days are use them or lose them. If you take more than you’ve accrued you will have to pay it back.

@OP
Take your vacations first, then come back to work and quit the next day.
Like other person mentioned, they may clawback some stuff, check the policy portal.

If you're 60 years old and have at least five years' service at BNY, you do not lose your 401(k) match for the year.

If under 60, I believe you get it if you're here until October 31st, not December 31st.

I've seriously thought about taking all my vacation days, sick days, and any other available time off just before I quit, and then "working" from home for the last two weeks (or whatever) before I leave. Might as well get something out of them.

A few years ago, we all got a notice if exempt that you have to provide notice depending on level of 30, 60, or 90 days.

They might be able to clawback some things.. not sure what, but be careful with that. You WILL lose any 401K match, but that is more about staying through end of year, specifically Dec 31st.

You are an employee at will. So yes you can quit without notice unless you signed an agreement explicitly stating you would provide said notice and how much you had to provide and what the consequences are if you failed to do so. As others have pointed out the Bank no longer pays out unused vacation time unless the state where you are employed in requires that they do so. For example if you work out of a Massachusetts office you get your unused vacation time. If working out of Florida you do not.

Nothing they can do. And I’ve seen it happen. Even some people who were here for a few years, just went on vacation and never came back. If you have nothing to lose, then this is a good strategy for a putrid company.

A5, I stand corrected. No vacation payouts for only the last few years and not early 2000s. Same ending

@a2
BS, they gave us unused vacation pay until just a few years ago.

There is 0.0 they can do. If you were some young person looking to move to another department or job, then you would have to put in notice. But quitting is quitting- you are the boss, especially if you are done working. You’re lucky. You are Andy Dufresne from Shawshank. :)

No more accrued vacation payouts since early 2000s unless you work for city, county, state, or feds. Not fair but the way it iś

Nothing they can do. They don’t pay you for unused vacation anyway.
