Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why att want out of Telephony

AT&T wants to be a wireless, content driven company with a fiber footprint. Period, end of story. It does not want the following:

Dial tone - they don't want to deal with it anymore.

Data networking, it failed at SDWAN as it was too late and too difficult to implement, no custom pricing

Network on Demand could have been great. Fantastic solution that nobody knew anything about.

Security, failed at that, as it was also too late, expensive and too difficult to implement
Consulting, too costly for the company and the customer

Ip Telephony - OMG, We went from Ring Central to who knows what, what a bomb

Ip Flex was very good, However, the credit we had to issue for lack of star codes k–led me Enhanced Features was good, but was way too late. The restrictions on the product were " horrible".

IP Toll free - great idea, implementation process was horrible.

This list goes on - obvious I am technical

We were really good at providing communications for a really long time. It’s what we were built for it’s what we know. Our management saw streaming content and decided he we can do that. It would be the same if Ferrari decided hey let’s make cruise ships. Sure they both involve transportation, but it stops there. We have a massive fiber network yet completely underutilize it. We have wireless, but we are overpriced, and don’t want to put more into it. We had such a great reputation that we stopped worrying about our customers. Now our brand is tanking.

@1zpv....I heard that some of these DS0 contracts will not be renewed once they expire.... Was working a trouble on an intelliport circuit for a federal agency that deals with aviation(not naming names), tester said they will force them to at least T1 once contracts are up... we'll see.

4 Wall Central Office tech here. As I cover more and more offices, I am continually amazed at how much POTS, DS0, DS1, DSL and other subscribers we still have. Hell, I even put in an FXO/FXS circuit in a couple of days ago. Some of these circuits are still being used by major accounts. Who is going to turn off the switch on all of this?

Att Mobility is a complete joke! Mobility works in a env that was great, 20yrs ago. Mobility is SO bloated. If you want to make a change, you fill out 5 docs. The request goes to a manager, who assigns it to a team. The team lead assigns it to an engineer. The engineer sends it off to labs/ATS. ATS has 3 weeks to create a MOP, that already exists (I.e. they just copy an old doc). MOP goes back to engineer, who assigns it to an offshore person for implementation. Better not be in any hurry for change at ATT Mobility. You will make a lot of people (who do nothing) really mad. Heard

Sdwan - I work on that with my new job the id–t managers don’t know who knows what and let the wrong people go. They are too busy keeping their buddies no matter how much they don’t know. How the company chooses their so called leaders and managers is a joke because they don’t know skills and talent if it hit them in the face.

With AT&T's nineteenth century management style they will NEVER be a successful content company. Never ever.

AT&T management could run a mediocre cotton mill, a textile factory or a blacksmith shop MAYBE, but never a business that requires creativity and independence of thought. This is the absolutely worst company to have bought content media, and those acquisitions will fail and be sold off for pennies on the dollar just like everything AT&T has bought since NCR.

After T stops providing voice and UVerse, sells what's left of DTV, and finishes destroying Time Warner Media, what exactly is going to be left of this company? Not fiber because we only made a half as$ed investment in that. AT&T will be a third rate wireless company and that's about it.

Fiber died because they're pinning their hopes on the cheaper solution of 5G wireless.

However, even wireless requires an optical backbone to carry the traffic to / from the towers so they really can't get rid of the backbone systems. Which means they have to keep the Central Offices where these fiber systems inter-connect with one another.

Getting out of the landline business is tough as a Telecom because you have a mandate to provide emergency ( 911 ) coverage to everyone within your serving area. This means they have to figure out how to get wireless to the rural areas ( $$$ to implement ) before they can fully de-shackle from the landline business.

If anything, they'll have to beef up the optical capacity to and from the towers if 5G bandwidth / throughput is going to become a reality.

AT&T leaders have a fatal flaw... they covet what other companies do vs defining their own value proposition and investing to make it a reality. So, T is now a modern media company with a leader that knows more about TV than anyone, and yet HBO max is an epic fail. They keep talking about the power of the AT&T brand, at this rate the brand power of AT&T is on same trajectory as Sears... we now have 13+ years of over promising and way under delivery. I challenge anyone to name a single success in this timeframe. Companies that outsource functions have lost control over these areas to begin with.... T has now outsourced a significant portion (majority...?) of core network operations.... that used to be a core value proposition for us.... that’s awful.... sad to say that the AT&T model is to hollow out business from the inside year after year with zero regard to customers nor employees. Anyone can cut, it really doesn’t take much IQ... the leaders in American business have the courage to grow. Think amazon, Facebook, Apple, Netflix even Microsoft... When they make a strategic decision they have the stones to invest to achieve growth....

No of those ideas are bad, just that the c-suite s—s at executing. Look at HBO MAX, vast library of TW content but the worst streaming launch ever.

People in hell want ice water. Att wants a lot of things but never wants to invest in them. Wants a fiber footprint but didn't want to build it. Wants the best wireless network but was unwilling to invest what it takes to be the best. Att should be re-named Cuts Corners. And by the way, IPFLEX has THE WORST customer service of them all.
