Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why in the world would anybody quit right now?

Especially if they don't have a new job lined up? (Those who do I understand perfectly.) A coworker is so fed up with AT&T that he is considering just walking out. No severance, no job lined up, nothing. I understand he is upset, but how can he not see this is the worst possible time to make such an impulse decision? There are no jobs out there! Plus, with all the layoffs, severance is within reach of pretty much everybody right now. Why waste an opportunity to walk away with some extra cash?

I think this is one of the reasons the company has been treating us so abhorrently lately. Push everybody to their breaking point so they walk away with nothing.

That Medicare subsidy is to cover what you need to pay for Medicare Part B once you've become unemployed. So long as you are employed, you delay applying for Medicare Part B (you still need to apply for Medicare Part A before you turn 65).

Instead of Medicare Part B coverage, you have an equivalent part in your employee health care that you lose in the retiree healthcare package, hence the need for the subsidy to add back the government's Medicare Part B coverage to have roughly equivalent coverage you had when employed.

It's not really extra money, it's replacement for part of a benefit you have, but will lose 6 months after retirement, so should not be considered an incentive to retire.

I get it. I was there a couple months ago. I had written up my letter of resignation and sat on it for a couple days. A good friend of mine told me to do the bare min and collect a check. That’s what I did and I just quit caring. I do what they ask me to do and I barely do that. Once you really stop investing yourself into the job, it gets way easier. I no longer push back on anything they want to do. I don’t get mad, I don’t say anything on the calls. Even the calls about layoffs and such, I don’t even pay attention. It’s really helped my sanity.

  • AT&T should offer a MVO......

MVO? That's a joke. No real benefit to take MVO over getting laid off anyway. Make a REAL offer and maybe you will get some takers.

Some people have enough cash or cash flow to pivot away from AT&T

If a 2700 dollar Medicare subsidy is the only incentive needed to get people to retire, they are paying waaay too much in severance.

I understand your coworker. At this time they need friends/family to encourage and help them calm down, not stoke the fire. Remind them they still receive a paycheck, and many other people are going through the same thing.
Start remembering there are ‘technically’ 8 hours in a workday .... start taking a few steps back and just do what you can each day. Do what your boss requests for those 8 hours - at a human, not a bot, pace - Regardless of threats, anger, guilt, or outages beyond that. If you start doing one thing and the boss asks for another, fine - tell them you will switch to that for the rest of the time you have.
I am in the same boat, and although my hours are greatly more than 8 per day, I remind myself of the above and am taking steps toward that end.
You can greatly reduce your own stress this way and ride out this crazy train for a bit longer.
At this point I am hoping to be surplused, but I won’t quit without my severance!!
And also remember things are changing fast- your boss today may not be your boss tomorrow... for good or bad , just hold on, things will even out eventually. (it’s definitely not a good time to quit without another job unless you are set financially, including health insurance)

If T wants to get rid of its older employees both management & craft, then give the offer in EVERY area of the country and not just states that are part of the ATT national foot print. There are many many retirement eligible employees ALL over the U.S. that would be happy to leave if only they were incentivized to do so! Then just do it, T!

AT&T should offer a MVO....they had offers for craft now give management a chance to clear out everyone that wants to leave for one reason or another. I’m not ready to retire but I would listen. Good luck everyone !

People who don’t live paycheck to paycheck always have this option. Maybe your coworker has a fat savings account. Trust me, it’s very liberating

Only people leaving would be those that are ready for retirement. There are some of those every year. And remember we lose that money they provide (for now) for people who reach 65 and are on Medicare for the Medicare part that government doesn't cover (AT&T pays max 2700 if you meet rule of 75 and if you are part of companies that have that coverage).

Either you own your job, or the job owns you!! Either you’re like Stankey that is accountable to on one or you come in every day and get put through a meat grinder!!
