Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T IS FAIR, HONEST, AND ETHICAL AS A WHOLE

Don’t get me wrong. I have worked for several unethical managers. Those who will do whatever they need to do, to make their numbers look good. But HR is fair, honest, and ethical.

Nearly a decade ago AT&T began to organize and communicate the 2020 Business Plan. That was HR telling me, and you, what we need to do to keep up our skills to continue employment with the company. My decision was like a majority of employees. Continue to contribute my best each and every day and , go with the flow.

As each department had a surplus of employees, it was more like a game of musical chairs. One day an announcement was issued, the music stopped, and I was asked to leave the company. That was in 1Q2019 and I was ready. Why? Because HR did their job and gave me a decade (10 years) to prepare for this day. All I can say is, “Thank you, HR.” AT&T was a great career!

There is life beyond AT&T.

LOL, I kept my skills up too.... they still outsourced me all the L1s in my group, the L2s, I was an L2b... a Principal... they got me, my group, all the way up to the AVP and then... sent us packing to IBM where 50% have already been sent packing and are all looking for jobs now.

Me.... I left IBM and I'm working somewhere else... I kept my skills up so, where those skills not only worked inside ATT but, they also worked down the street... where I got a raise, better benefits and even a restricted stock deal.... I was very fortunate. I wanted to retire from ATT.... I loved the work I was doing and loved my boss and my peers.

The idea that keeping your skills up at ATT and you will be protected is.... frankly nuts. You keep yourself safe by keeping your skills valid enough to go somewhere else.... and these days, that might not be enough either.

If you have been affected by this... hang in there.... I'm sorry it happened to you... it happened to me and my group also... they just sent us to IBM where they only give you a year contract then 2 weeks and nothing after that.... unless they decide to rebargain your contract with them or some other BS.... I don't know.... I got the hell out of there.

What the hell have you been smoking? I took all of the training in PLE, which they changed and deleted courses over the past few years, and didn't help me at all. I know a lot of folks that were caught up on their training in PLE, and that didn't matter with the surplus. And a lot of the PLE training is useless elsewhere, was told that when I interviewed with other companies.

7/14/20: Verizon hasn't laid off any of its 135,000 employees during the pandemic. Instead, the company has retrained around 20,000 workers for new careers. https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/14/business/verizon-jobs-ceo-hans-vestberg/

@1zvg, I think that it's a given that HR is here to protect management from their errors that could cause the company to get sued. With that, bad managers get shielded and stay and live another day to screw up. I have seen over the years where some of the really bad are let go. Aside from all that, HR does try to help in many ways, along with T-University, ok, stop laughing, to help all of us get sharper skills, newer or new skills, to make it easier for you to move on.

OP could not be more wrong about HR—they are not fair, honest or ethical—they are a puppet of senior management.

Sounds like OP is a victim of the Stockholm Syndrome (victim identifies with its oppressor).

what a stupid post. I didn't need att to keep my skills up. I kept my skills up outside of att that would help in the industry not the stupid micro, nano bs. was there 18 years and when I had enough pension I had offers on my first three resumes I sent and att had nothing to do with it. I came and collected a check and left. HR was useless when I had unethical managers and always took their side. I was trying to stay just to get some retiree benefits but when I discovered I could get better wireless deals than I was getting with my employee discount I knew it was time to go. att doesn't keep up with the time and will suffer because of it and cannot be agile.
I don't owe att any thanks they never treated me well and it was always playing musical chairs moving from org to another to avoid surplus. att is a waste of a company and HR is even more of a joke. I came to work and got paid for and got benefits for it and that was it and when I got sick of the politics and the useless managers I left. I don't have any att services now and I am with a company that innovates and doesn't play games with working from home. we ALL work from home not just my niece jenning or my uncle jim can only work from. att is cesspool.

OP response to Post ID: @qti+15VI6q6u

I agree with everything in your response. So much so that I added a “+” to your comment.

Considering the encroaching technological changes by advancing competition, will it be fair to say that corporate vision is not as fluid as the impact on the company? In my humble opinion, the training and nano-degrees become obsolete for AT&T before they can be used.

SpaceX Starlink is in Beta testing, starting from northern most subscribers, first. How can Verizon, AT&T, or any other company keep up with this advancing technology? The decisions made by AT&T Board members is not easy. This is what I mean by the word, fluid. Technology is changing so fast.

So when HR told you "what we need to do to keep up our skills to continue employment with the company" and you took the corresponding courses in PLE and got your nanodegree, did that result in your keeping your employment with AT&T? Or like thousands of others, didn't it matter one bit?

With due respect to your underlying point, when the ax falls, there isn't some central intelligence in the business that says "That person has a nanodegree, so she shouldn't be cut" or "that director has kept his/her people sharp and has kept numbers far above expectations, so that team needs to stay."

Instead, every single time it's fallen for the past 23 years I've been here, it's been, "This business unit needs to lose X thousand people, so divide it up equally among teams and sub-teams and just give me a list of names."

I agree, I have done the same, and await the call, however you are spot on. You will also be attacked by the whackos that cruise this site for speaking the truth, and positively about the company. They've been more than upfront all along.
