Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Maybe this reorg is what's really needed

First, I truly feel bad for anyone whose job is eliminated. My own brother was let go in January, 2019 after 20 years with the company. I've worked with a lot of great folks in my long career, and it's sad to see some go that weren't prepared.

A lot of what I'm seeing really makes sense. Eliminating and discontinuing to offer services that lose money, and realigning groups that do around profitable customers.

Companies that manufacture products don't keep making products that nobody buys. Why are we selling services that nobody buys? If you sell hot dogs and hamburgers, but most everyone buys hot dogs, do you keep offering hamburgers even though you throw away 50% of what you buy when it spoils before being sold? I've seen a lot of info lately that points towards dumping losing propositions and and spending more on winners. That's business 101.

I see this as a positive thing for the long term survival of the company.

I also feel for those who will be forced out.

He/She is probably a union employee with seniority and a job offer guarantee as part of his/her labor contract that basically believes the company has an obligation to keep them around simply because they are human and breathe air and want a job. Their is no reasoning with illogical union folks. Just sit back and shake your head at the ignorance and entitlement.

What drivel is this from an uneducated imbecile. Is life stressful in the basement Buttercup?

I think the "hamburger" (copper network) can't be jettisoned because of government regulations. I think if there was no government regulation, the "hamburger" would be discontinued immediately.

There isn't going to be any long term survival of this corporation.
It's all about fornicating the pooch and lining pockets for as long as possible.
There isn't going to be a magical regime change that can resurrect the dead.

"I get the sense OP thinks he will not be cut for some reason and he is untouchable. Now why would that be?"

Re-engineering, re-organization, reduction can all make good sense – but not when in the aftermath incompetent leadership who ruined a national-treasure company is amongst those left standing (e.g., Arroyo, Fuestch) or those jumping off the mothership with golden parachutes (e.g., Donovan, Stephenson).

Layoffs are because you are no longer needed by the company. It is difficult to accept but it is reality.

In a tangible, hamburger-based world, the OP's question makes sense. But AT&T's "products" of connectivity are really varying configurations of software on top of a foundation of the same hardware.

In AT&T's case, the company can sell patty-shaped ground-up hot dog meat and serve the hamburger-loving customer just fine (sorry for the analogy stretched thin). But they don't have to come up with pricing, promotions, product managers, contract specialists, and entire bureaucracies to support the the sale of both hamburgers and hot dogs. That's where the "savings" lies.

As another poster pointed out, the foundation of hardware and software still needs to be installed, maintained, and enhanced to support these configurations. But AT&T, in its short-sighted dumpster fire of senior management, is simply cutting the entire company 30%. Another poster pointed out that it's not actually targeting jobs that support the 'losing' products.

The OP would be correct if it weren't for the fact that the deathstar is not focusing only only trimming in areas where demand is dipping. Unfortunately, at&t is cutting jobs everywhere, regardless of title, group, project, duty, or product.

People in mobility, where demand remains high? Laid off. People in video & broadband where growth is still happening? Laid off. And so on.

Don't be fooled. If this round of layoffs were only due to irrelevant tech it would be small. This layoff is because Randy and Stinky and the rest mismanaged and overspent, failed to read the customer demand, rushed shoddy products, and are out of touch. Oh, that and those vultures from Elliot want a higher dividend,

very clever Stinki, please limit yourself to bankrupt the company and do not post here.

if OP is a wannabe a reasonable assumption, here is a free lesson; Rather than improve, Stinki& the corporate double-talk designed to obfuscate and confuse. Worse, it can make everyone feel unempowered.
when Leadership don’t understand what’s being said, it can make you feel like an outsider, or like you’re uninformed, but on reality they are as lost as we are.

your welcome!

Liar. We aren't eliminating unnecessary positions, we are terminating middle class American jobs with benefits and sending them to cheap third world sweatshops.

All the socially woke emails in the world isn't going to cover for the American careers this company has ruined to satisfy the greed of our executives.
