Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Very concerned about out future here

There is a ton to report here – in short 1400 will be laid off, if you add contractors on top of this list the number will be much much larger. They are moving P&Ls...

Now focus is on big centers, NYC, etc. there is a ton of danger here as we are moving away from core values – the internal shuffle is welcome, Spillane is talented, but there is soooo much risk in this.

Finally, on the IT side, all moves are wrong (IMHO) – more outsourcing, less technical focus will lead to crippled capabilities in the future – we will not have solid know-how, talent, engagement, etc. if we start using outsourcing even more. You need to have dedicated employees who root for the company, who live the brand and can give you that 200% - you need to have that to have a competitive edge. With outsourcing and contractors all what you get are bodies, change requests, delays…

I am very concerned…

This is round one. There is a round 2 and it will hit in august. At that time, the cuts will be heavier in geographies, and enabling functions ( IT again, HR, Procurement, Workplace Design and Connectivity, Category Ops, Legal, and Supply Chain). Nike must do something aggressive to regain swagger, but the C Suite has been misled by McKinsey's of the world that operational overhead reduction is the correct step in that direction.

The leaders of Nike are strong, but one click down, it's largely a disaster. There are 100's of Vice Presidents. Many of them outsiders, with little historic understanding of what makes Nike, Nike. The culture has eroded for years, and accelerated greatly since 2014. It takes someone special to,lead at Nike, and that has somehow become lost. The culture must be regained. Many of those cut were well versed in driving culture.

Additionally, Nike must now learn that the playing field has shifted with consumer behaviors. While the brand is still hot, it is slipping with key demographics quickly. The brand heat is faded. They are chasing adidas now. You can feel it. Revenues at Nike higher, but you can feel that the table has turned, momentum has switched to Herzo.

If Nike is serious about change, look to the 100's of S bands that are steering the Goddess straight into an iceberg.

More H1Bs? Toyota and Honda dealers rejoice! But with Trump's clampdown on H1B, that should be interesting.

Less employees, more contractors, more h1b

Does that mean, more H1B's or less will be "used" by Nike?

How do these posts get 100s of views in an hour or two? Is every single person working here on this site? Is this legit?

I'd be careful with using a company provided laptop while surfing here - I am sure all traffic on the network is tracked.

Times are changing, the consumer is changing, the competition is changing, we'll have to change.

We've done it many times, and we'll do it again.

Yes, we've seen better days - but this is just one step in a never ending process of realigning, adjusting, morphing and adapting - Nike needs to do it and each of us has to do it fairly often.

I'd stop complaining about things that cannot be change by the individual, I'd focus on things that I can control and influence such is: skills, personal brand, relationships, knowledge, etc.

Just my two cents on this difficult topic.

Yea, but everyone will still get to drink at work and 50% off at the store. Life is good.

@cfr nails it - nobody talks about Nike and #h1b abuse - but we mastered this skill over last two decades

This is just a beginning - if you are in IT and are an American male and over 50, you have no future here

Nike is huge H1B Visa abuse users. They did this in the 1990's and they are doing it again. All new blood <5yrs will be smoked like a pack of Kools. Not a good place for a career. The old heads and the Dutch Mafia from the 1990s (Dutch) invasion will protect their jobs - when they are the problem.
