Thread regarding Altice USA (Cablevision) layoffs

Big Brother

We're getting cameras in our trucks so they can watch our every move. I wonder how many will get disciplinary actions or lose their jobs over this. As if they don't have us stressed out enough, which is a safety issue itself decreasing focus on tasks and productivity. Techs worried to death that if something happens, even if they do the right thing, they're almost 100% getting disciplined. Accountability they say? Yeah, for everyone except management. This company is terrible.

Anyone have real life experience with the camera yet? How many options did they pick.? I’ll tell you to stop picking your nose while you’re driving cause they’re watching you. Lol

“Industry standard?” Since when does this outfit conform to industry standards. We’re talking pay, salaries, benefits, career prospects, scheduled weekends. Compared to the phone company, they make their own rules.

@15r “they don’t deserve to watch me” it’s their company, their trucks, their tools, their equipment, but yea they have no right to invade my privacy.

Cameras are an industry standard these days. Do the right thing and no worries. Actually can help you in a "he said she said" accident

@y1 no one’s trying to defame you, just pointing out that you’re no one special and this has been a long time coming. You also have contractors doing half your work also so what’s your point?

The correlation made below about a plumber charging $600 was not a comparison - it was as stated, a correlation. The objective was to highlight a very important intangible known as experience. No one in OSP/Construction/ISP/FNM proclaims to be an untouchable skilled genius. But experience needs to be taken into consideration when you are spewing uneducated falsehoods about simply being “parts changers.” We all know that is BS. Stop saying things that you know are not true in attempt to defame a particular group of workers who are most likely in the same tax bracket as yourself. Every job in this business has its challenges and we need to stop tearing each other down over someone making an extra $5 per hour. Blue collar workers vs blue collar workers? Really bro? This is the battle you are choosing? Shame on you…

Last I checked all the day laborers were doing your job... fiber. Now since I'm so "skilled" at osp I get to fix my stuff and yours. By the time that gets straightened out the day laborers doing plant now will have completed have wrecked the coax. Then they will need me more than ever. Its just a job, if I lose it I will get another. You are way too cool, making all these general statements trashing a group. Guys you work with now must despise you.

@x7 it’s not about being on their team but you act like you’re this skilled employee that’s not replaceable and the plumbing comparison is laughable, we’re not licensed plumbers or electricians that get to pick our rate, we’re hourly employees that were trained by an in house training department and on the job training. Stop acting like “oh I chased ingress that should’ve taken 2 hours but only took 30 minutes now I’ll go sleep at dunkin”. The more you sc--w around the more they contract out, the more they contract out the less valuable you are, and so on.

You’re an interesting character. Your post reads as though you are one of those annoying people who pokes around looking for information on what OSP or construction does with the intention to act like you know the job and then use it against everyone. Well, congrats on being a useful id--t shill for a company that doesn’t care about anybody - including you. You’re jealous of a working stiff who makes $5 more an hour than you do but I guess it’s ok for the CEO to get a $5M bonus. Your posts read like you’re on their team. One other thing, anyone who has any extensive technical knowledge knows that someone’s value lies in what they know, what they have seen and how they troubleshoot - not in how much physical labor they accomplish. A plumber will stop a leak from flooding your basement in 10 minutes and charge you $600. Do you argue with him and claim that 10 minutes of work doesn’t justify $600? Or do you recognize that $600 saved your house from flooding? And that stupid comment about on call, “your standby generally isn’t too long” - what does this even mean?? Do you even know what the rotation is? It is a set time frame of 24/7 for 7 days. Using the word “generally” would indicate that there is variability or the time frame would change. It does not and if you actually knew anything about the job, you would know this too. Did they not yell you that in the parking lot?

@x3 did the field for years, did plant and construction for a few years then did fiber for the last decade. If you don’t have a valid argument to refute anything I said you can just say it.

Exactly, it’s all about money, they want you to maximize your production, so how is this a wasted take? Every other department would agree that you guys were always overlooked when it came to this. This isn’t divide and conquer, it’s realizing that you guys have been entitled parts changers for years and aren’t anything more special than any other department, you’ve got guys in OSP that have spent the last decade doing nothing but power supply maintenance, you can train any one to do that, but you want to sit here like you have an engineering degree when all you are is a field tech working on a larger network than a house. It’s not being a keyboard warrior if I’m willing to speak this to anyone’s face now is it? It’s funny how not a single response has refuted anything that was said, you can take this as me sitting here bashing you guys but maybe just take a step back and realize that you guys became this entitled group that refused to grow, refused to learn fiber, refused to do NID tickets because you think you’re better than that, the list goes on. Instead of being offended by this why don’t you go back learn some new stuff, stop being entitled and acting you’re the ones holding the whole network together, because there plenty of other departments that without them you also wouldn’t have a network to maintain, with ISP, fiber, engineering and all the backend departments your network wouldn’t exist, without construction and design there wouldn’t be a network to work on, without the field guys you wouldn’t have any customers to maintain a network for. Stop acting like I’m the one who’s dividing and conquering when it’s been the OSP department that’s isolated themselves from all the other departments with your pompous attitudes.

@nk sorry if pampered didn’t describe most of the osp department, parking lot princesses better? Don’t start with the wah I get called out for standby, we’ve all done it and still do it, your standby generally isn’t too long, chase your ingress, change your fuse, swap out a power supply, hand it off to fiber or ISP and your on your way home. Do a fiber outage that lasts 20 plus hours after working your sh-t then come back and complain. You guys spent years at ATS swapping out rg6 to rg11 for WiFi units, used to spend hours on end waiting for ingress that never came, and what now? You spend an hour on a job then not trouble found it and head to a parking lot to read the paper and sleep. It’s been a long time since you guys were the respected group you once were, somewhere along the line you guys became an entitled bunch of bucket fa----s that refuse to do anything, you’ve got OSP techs that have 30 plus years that can’t rebuild a pdo if they had to because they refused to learn over the past 10 years, and it was allowed because all those long time sups protected you, now they’re all gone and you’re mad you have to do a full days work and are expected to follow the rules. You guys just had a 30 year tech 2 weeks ago get fired because he got caught up in the bucket with no hard hat, no harness, no cones, or wheel chocks, so stop acting like you’re the cream of the crop when most of you have just been comfortable being advanced parts changers.

If they are installing cameras its because they are saving money....maybe on insurance. You can bet no one will be actually using the system and improving the business because of them. That would make too much sense.

Pampered? Come live the life a week of on call... then talk sm--k. We do everything that everyone else is supposed to do and then some. We do it without tools and equipment and sacrifice time we will never get back with our families. Current management has no clue what they are doing and have done nothing but make the job way harder than it needs to be. Sounds like there is someone you should say that to, instead of making a general statement. This place cuts me loose, its their loss not mine. Now go tell that osp tech how your really feel.

To anyone complaining, you guys have done it to yourself, you’ve had the opportunity to leave many times but you didn’t want to put in the effort to find something with comparable pay or even higher pay. The days of doing your whole route and then closing all your jobs out through the IVR are long gone. As far as OSP, your protection is gone also, you guys have been the most pampered of all the groups for the longest time. You’ve all had the opportunity to go union many times over the years but chose to believe in the company.

Pitting one department against the other is stupid. If you want to bring about some kind of constructive change, you need a united front to stand against senior leadership at Altice…NOT division.

Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed that you can’t do anything beyond changing a splitter or replacing a cable box. OSP is where the real work is done and there would be no customers without that department. Don’t be afraid, apply for the next opening and advance your career. Move forward, don’t look back.

Make sure you do a ppe, ladder and full vehicle inspection on that camera for at least an hour every morning... and make sure everything properly gets addressed before that 8-11
