Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Early Warning

Managers in design centre are prepping for job cuts. Design usually runs lean, and misses the cuts happening in the rest of the company. If this is correct, GM is in trouble. Design has been told in the past that if studios are cutting there are issues coming.

Interesting reading here. I see nothing much has changed since 1990 or so when i was in regular contact with them. You are right , new products are cr*p. I bought a new caddy by mistake .The interior studio and the VLE should be fired. Obviously designed by people who nothing abut cars. Then my Silverado 5.3L lifter seized while I was out of town and the dealer charged me $10k to fix it so i could get home. I will never buy another GM vehicle . Also, anyone who thinks that your organization can launch a new full size truck AND a new engine at the same time is going to be proven to be very wrong. IMHO

i am not sure you understand what is meant by the acronym AI
i thought that mit did a study that revealed something like 90-95% of llms
were not beneficial

if 'ai' was successful wouldn't it replace most of the finance folks
and a large number of bureaucrats

Our products are already getting a bad reputation. We don't have the proper design resources to design cars properly. We certainly aren't testing them. They are being rushed to market with every conceivable corner cut. It's going to end in disaster for everyone. It's extremely disheartening to experience day by day and most are burnt out.

Product design is the heart and soul of the enterprise.
I'm not just talking about the body styling. I'm talking about the body structure & chassis, electrical, power train, interior, etc. Massive cuts.
I can't imagine what upper management is thinking but they will face the music one day when the failures are obvious to everyone.

I just took a massive fiber loaded sh-t. It was solid, smooth, and medium brown, it wiped clean. Based on that, this thread is very true.

How long do you think AI implementation will be "bad" given the advancements in AI in the last 2 years? More tweaking, training, enhancing, tightening, testing all in a rapid virtual environment...
During the bust of the dot.com bo-m, people were saying with great authority that "the internet is just a fad". This tech is going to get to nightmarish levels. The devil is out of the box now.

Is that why the corporate AI implementation is so bad? Its built off design management?

Just going to leave this here:
Imagine a scenario where the corporation installed a background AI script that, as you continued working, you were actually training AI to replace you.

I used to joke about all the secrecy in Design. Yep, don’t let anyone learn how to consistently lose market share every year,

"Design runs lean"
That's a joke. Design might be the biggest black hole money sink on the WTC campus. Poorly ran, zero efficiency and full of unchecked egos. The number of managers and directors seemingly doing nothing is mind boggling. Salary overtime budgets exceed hourly. Where in the world does that ever happen? I think there was a post here months ago talking about how sc--wed up the management was over there. A bunch of out of touch boomers trying to run it like the 1950s when they started over there. The bad ones get promoted to director level to hide them, that's why there is so many of them. Leadership over there needs to be gutted and the actual workforce needs to be trained on modern machines and technology.

@w4 As a DRE we are maxed out workload wise with even more projects coming with no planned additional staff. Plus, what you don't know is that the designers are actually swamped. Can’t imagine how they could cut folks in our area and meet deliverables.

If Design is forced to get it right the first time like Engineering now has to with the new VDP, the company won’t need as many designers.

I doubt it but I find it strange you are claiming the company is troubled if it was true when they have invested in design out west.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the digital sculptures get canned.

GM wants a fresh innovation start out in California. They’ll just hired digital sculptures out there at twice the salary, then just cut more people out east because no one is keeping track of costs.

Is Design still trying to operate as a separate company? Different rules and policies from the rest of the company. Makes it difficult for those of us trying to do the right thing.
Prima Donnas that think rules are for other people.
