Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Thinking about selling a few things...

That dell "issued" me. Obviously not the computers as I need those, and those are tracked lol... but I'm talking about a few things that were given to me via Dell and via the perhiprial request form..

A headset worth $250 that I don't REALLY need, a dock that is MSRP $569 as two examples...

I started 8 years ago and have had the same dock since then. It still works fine but its been doing goofy things when I plug it into my personal laptop so, I requested a new dock. Finally got it and this dock is retailing for fkn $600! I have no reason to have two docks but, I'm 99% positive that anything you request (minus computers) from dell is not tracked nor are you "issued" it in terms of tracking purposes, nor are you obligated to return if laid off/quit.

This dock has no service tag sticker on it like our computers do and sure, I have no doubt they have the SN of it tied to my name but, I've ordered 3 headsets in my years - 1 broke, the other had the mic chewed up by my puppy. Those headsets are like $250...

The other device I have I'm confident I could sell because it came from my contracting company - but was technically purchased via Dell - and I could get about $200-500 for it. The licenses have run out on it at this point which devalued it by about 3k but it's just collecting dust in my closet at this point.

I'm very much considering selling this new dock though... Hasn't even been plugged in yet. Worst that can happen is I get laid off and they ask for it back, which I can say it was lost during a move or stolen...

@tm yep, same here...they just want the laptop. I've got monitors and docking stations. They didn't want any of that. THey were going to scrap it anyhow. Probably saves them money.

When i left dell all the7 wanted back was my computer. During covid I checked out a desk chair from the office and I still use it at my new job now! And no one asked for any docks, headsets or monitors back either.

The same people bi--hing about RTO now find issues with not returning outdated equipment that Dell doesn't even want back. You can't make this stuff up.

If you spent just a fraction of the time you spent thinking/scheming about this on something good, the world would be in a better place.

Bro if you're so broke that you need to sell checks notes about $1000 of company property, you got bigger problems.

@OP Maybe you can retire with all the money you make off the equipment, sounds like a great retirement plan

Whenever equipment refresh time comes arpund I've sold every old laptop or desktop Dell has issued me. You just need to make sure to remove the asset sticker and thoroughly wipe the hdd. When we got new monitors in the office I found out the old ones were just being sent to an e-waste recycling company so I took over a dozen home to use/sell. Every time I open a ticket for audio issues IT sends me a new headset, even when its not the headset that's causing problems. I've currently got 6 of them that work just fine on my personal computers. Assets are not tracked anywhere near as closely as others on here have stated.

Embarrassed for you. Despite how poorly you feel you are being treated you are diminishing the value of those of us truly going through this struggle with the best of intentions to be great at what we do and to provide for ourselves and our families. You may not agree with the company or policies, but at no point does anything you disagree with justify bankrupting your morals and devaluing the rest of us publicly with this nonsense. To be clear, your employer invested in you with technology and an ecosystem to do your job. You were not owed or gifted these things. Selling someone else's property for personal gain is top tier dirt bag behavior.

@a4 not true. I was laid off and have three monitors and three docking stations from Dell. All they wanted back was my laptop and badge.

Just so we’re clear:

  • You have a plan to sell Co equipment
  • You’re posting on an open forum
  • You’re sharing your planned sell prices
  • Thus when you list, we can see who you are

Maybe just me, but if you are a thief, 100% dishonest, have no moral compass and plan to never work for another major firm….go wild.

Those sound more like list prices than actual selling ones. Nobody buys at list prices, not even retail distributors, unless they are so d-mb to let OEMs scam them.
So I wouldn't bet too much on actually pocketing that money if you try to sell them.

@OP Every company-issued asset.. including docks, headphones, and any other peripherals is logged, tracked, and classified as bonded property. These items must be returned in full during your exit process. Failure to do so will result in you being held financially liable for the full replacement cost.

Please consider your next steps carefully. Attempting to sell company assets is a serious policy violation and a direct path to disciplinary and legal consequences.
