Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Data Townhall

It’s been a few months. What’s the verdict on the new GM?

Are we offshoring all data jobs in the next couple of years?

The only takeaway for me was the OE moment. Basically somebody executed some script that ran up a $4m bill in a day. That seems like a fire-able offense. Which id--t did this and that’s one expensive OE moment.

Oh and also a very long winded meeting where every manager talked about how they’re going to do AI, except half of our talent have already quit, with more of them coming next month after the bonus check clears.

I guess the answer is more EY.

“Have we started the fire?”

Yes. The fire rises.

Something so many jobs fail to recognize: The work can be manageable, the hours can be great and the pay can be competitive, but if there is a toxic workplace culture, even the most dedicated employees will eventually quit…

i have it on good authority that they hired an executive coach for AS so he can succeed LC…. that’s why he hung up his flip flops

Not sure who AS is but looking at the rosters certainly not anybody in DNI or AI.

How irrelevant has DNI become that you can’t even stay on topic and end up talking about some dorks in two other different organizations

@1x1 u guys should all just meet face to face and discuss because the group of people who actually know who these people are is quite small. This is not 5th grade.

What's considered overcomplicated at Chevron is standard or basic everywhere else.

Long time lurker second time commenter - AS has never gotten anything done. I take offense to that notion that he could draw diamonds and rectangles. He only knows how to manipulate others into doing the opposite of what he is trying to achieve. He has also never written a letter to the board of directors and owns a water bed. He is a certified coward. Would not trust him with a puppy, would have one, maybe two beers tops with him.

DNI is moving to EAI by end of year. Book it.

@10e I mean, partly because it's pretty obvious that DNI is ultimately there to serve EAI now (that's the line from LC and the new GM...). So if EAI is hemorrhaging then DNI is going to....do what exactly? The DNI story is the same now as last year. Order of operations: 1) application justification and sunsetting and 2) get jobs to India as fast as possible.

Can we get back on topic about DNI instead? Who cares about EAI? They have like 20 people…

It's crazy bc like GV, FZ, BH, PL are all still in the EAI team and haven't left yet.

@yk I’m sorry but IS was bot one of the leaders. He was an odd duck in that LT. Truly a weird pick by SB. Not a big loss IMHO

Post ID: @zj+1kjhafes0

@yk I don’t see him leaving what remains. That id--t’s biggest weakness is the people. Look around. There ain’t anybody left.

With IS out and now BH out with JL presumably on the hunt the majority of the leadership team on EAI is gone. The question in my mind is is that because if SB or JG or LC

@vj Data Science had already become completely dysfunctional after ImagineIT in 2020. LC and BCG simply finished the job.

Having left Chevron’s data science function during the last re-org, it’s now painful to look back with renewed clarity and recognize how utterly dysfunctional the organization is. Working elsewhere helped me realize that Stockholm syndrome is real. Better jobs for similar pay—where it’s possible to actually achieve things without conquering a veil of politics—do exist.

How’s Research Canvas and the Data Marketplace working out for y’all?

@s5 JL got hosed sticking around for selections in July for people he thinks actually care about him and Chevron, and start of a new school year. Everybody started leaving. There was no better tomorrow. I have high confidence that he’s just waiting out the school year before starting new elsewhere.

@t1 JG, LC, BCG, and EY ki-led any semblance of data science and AI at Chevron. The attrition is unbelievable. The only people left are those with golden handcuffs. 50 year olds who can’t get paid more elsewhere with that pension and LTIP.

@pn some of these people are leaving for lateral positions or even less pay (but remote work); or less pay, but increased status or responsibilities in another smaller company. A few variations there.

But generally speaking, due to the massive layoffs in tech, there aren’t many million-dollar-packages out there for the tech geniuses anymore. We had a lot go to places like Microsoft, databricks, and AWS over the past few years, and they’re getting a modest bump in pay for many more hours of work. Or people are going into some technical leadership roles in non-tech companies and taking home about the same pay or even less.

There are always hiring going on for senior leadership type of roles though, and then you can see people like the old “GM of data strategy” swindle her way into a VP of AI position at Weatherford.

@q2

80 hour week for 350k 300 equity at bug tech

40-50 hour week and 200k and 25-50k equity at big oil

factor in california taxes and cost of living and things get quite close.

@pz I know they are applying and many are having successes in interviews, but I know that one decided that the $/hr worked at chevron vs a tech company is really not worth leaving

Everyone’s situation is different. Let’s see what happens after bonuses hit the bank account. I have no doubt that more will quit.

seriously. if any of this talent thinks they have above zero percent chance at getting into those companies they should apply

@ed several already out the door. Tech leads who knew what was up, as well as like ... Some of the best actual AI devs in the enterprise. Wouldn't surprise me if more leads for the moonshots weren't also one foot out the door. If I were the GM who was just passed over for the VP role, I'd be seriously considering how much more of my life I'd spend in CVX when I could likely get a job at anthropic or open AI or similar.
