Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

First layoff of 2026

Let’s see if we can guess when we’ll have the first layoff of 2026. I’ll start: end of January.

I know people are rightfully upset. But the blame really isn’t on your manager. They are just the unfortunate ones who have to deliver the news. This is not just companywide, but industry wide. This not a safe industry longer and this industry is under fire. When you have staff left most of all who is getting RID’d are really strong employees. Especially if you have a team of seasoned vets. It’s unfortunately a sign of really hard times. If anything I would still keep an open positive relationship with your manager so they can recommend you for other internal positions.

@by6 The onshore telephony UMI team was laid off earlier this year due to the work transferring to Puerto Rico.

@bx - we will never double down on true value. A knowledgeable worker + AI will bring more value than a cheaper unknowable worker + AI. The temptation to double dip for short term gains is too great.

The biggest concern for UM is not AI. It’s offshoring.

I saw a post months ago here that UM would get hit. If you don't talk to anyone frankly there is no reason why that dept can't work hospital hours . 7 days a week 24/7, Sorry for anyone to lose their job but at least they are not member facing. If you cut the precert list you would need less and less staff.

@br2 yup I was one with 2 others to shut down after the meeting because termination was effective immediately. Not even in a Thursday or at least 2 weeks!

@25 - extending business hours is how “leveraging AI” really works. The layoffs have to happen to “show” AI investments are working.

Since when does this company care about being compliant? It’s cheaper just to pay the fines.

@252 So wait they are laying off UM people even when they are not compliant and going to make the people left work extended hours to get compliant? What a sh-tshow.

@24y I agree - I keep hearing a lot of chatter about downsizing UM significantly especially due to leveraging AI. Also hearing they will be extending hours of business and maybe 7 days a week to get them in compliance which apparently they haven't been in some time. Not surprised

@24y is that a large department? I would think larger teams/dept would be first to downsize

125 in customer service got RIF’d they work thru end of January. Sources from a rep who has worked till time to retire then got RIF’d themselves right before retirement. Terrible.
