@z3 Good point. Unfortunately though, he seems to have a lot more power in practice than what the law allows. So who knows.

The next time Trump does something on behalf of workers and against mega-wealthy will be the first time.

@ny My guess is that President Trump may wish that he has the power you seem to think he does, but reality is something different.

I'd like to see the offshoring stop. Just like I'd like to see our manufacturing jobs being replaced by cheaper imports.

Unfortunately, if this is anything like the tariffs, it will be a disaster.

It's also sad to see some of the people cheering this on are also being openly racist.

I expect either nothing to happen, or for the policy to be non-sense and arbitrary like the tariffs are, or for it to just be a shake down. Or some combination of the last two.

By "shake down" I mean, our CEO will just be expected to give Trump a gift made of gold, like "Tim Apple" recently did, and then be except from the policy.

The worst part is, Trump doesn't care what kind of damage he does to the US. Maybe he'll force everyone to fire their offshore workers immediately, and later get to hire them back when the right bribes are paid. Meanwhile, there's complete chaos. Which is terrible for jobs, the economy, etc. Long term, the impact is even worse. We'll lose our tech dominance, as other countries will want nothing to do with our crazy.

Even with an Indian subsidiary, they have little to no business in India - that’s the textbook definition of outsourcing because the only purpose is to shift U.S. work overseas.

The ownership structure doesn’t matter; the jobs are still gone. If outsourcing is banned, this model gets hit too.

Legally it doesn’t matter who owns the foreign entity, what matters is where the work is performed.

So if a company like Cigna that has no business in India other than doing U.S. work, regulators can’t pretend it’s “local Indian business.”

It’s obviously U.S. work being offshored. The legislation can be written to cover all foreign-based labor, regardless of whether it’s through contracts or subsidiaries.

While, I would love…LOVE…to see this happen, there’s no way big corporations will ever allow this. There’s just too much money involved. Every lobbyist will be activated. Most senators will see fat brown envelopes show up on their desks, and every CEO will get on their planes to Mar-a-Lago to block this legislation.

Also, a key word there is “outsourcing”. HIH isn’t technically outsourcing. It’s an Indian based subsidiary that hires local employees. That’s one of the reasons they set it up that way. It’s another form of protection against a bill like this.

I hope this is true for us in USA. I see people who have been doing the same work I do get promoted offshore within two years while I am still in the same position I started 10 years

Good direction if this gets implemented. Cost saving is not always the way to go. Managing cost and interest of the loyal employees who have been in the organization is equally important.

Big blow to the people of that 1 state from South India who are flocking to US like sheeps!
