Nike Culture is Dead

Bad leadership. Too many leaders do not understand the brand or the mission. They do not care deeply about sport or sneakers. They care about titles and power. They focus on themselves, not the company.

We promoted the wrong people. Then they promoted their friends and loyalists. Now it is people in power protecting each other instead of building the business. When the top is weak, everything below it crumbles.

EH has not reset the organization. The leaders under EH avoid hard decisions. There is a lot of head nodding and very little action. They wait for direction instead of leading. They are not building the future. They are not leaders.

Talent is leaving or has left. The people who care the most get frustrated and walk away. Strong voices are pushed out. The people who stay are comfortable, not outstanding.

There is zero accountability. When we fail at something, there is always an excuse. Market conditions. Timing. Someone else’s decision. No one clearly owns the failure. If no one owns it, nothing changes.

There is no unity. Teams protect their own goals instead of fighting for one mission. The culture is political and siloed. We do not act like one company.

This is the norm now. This is the new Nike culture.

@OP The only blame leadership deserves is for all the DEI hires and woke ideology that crashed the company. They hired a bunch of people who have no clue what they are doing WHILE wearing competitors products to work every day. They come in late and leave early every single day. THAT is the new “culture” that has been allowed to fester for FAR too long. They do NOT care about Nike succeeding. No doubt they will respond to this to defend their behavior and trash Nike, proving my point.

@ch it's not likely people were doing better work before COVID. Bro, the data engineers didn't use git sometimes. Everything was copy and pasted. The software engineers were so slow and their designs so cr-ppy. Sitting in office doesn't make it better by itself. He-l we have AI now and the prs still show sh-t code and stupid ideas 🫤

@cp we are more expense but so much better than the talent in Portland. You guys have run the company since first contractors and you're so, so bad. You spent money on such silly, stupid ways. It's hard to believe we're all titled engineers.

@js No it wasn't. Nike has never one of the best places to work, unless you're just a seat filler. Leadership is one thing, but the technical leadership blows hard. These chumps with their ridiculous ideas have cost nike a bunch of money. And then on the political side, they block any innovation because they want only want the credit for themselves. If your part of that group, know that they likely blocked your growth too and made your work harder and extra boring.

The managers are not given any budget, given no power to make real decisions, no authority to protect their employees. Not even Sr. Director levels have had a seat at the table for some of the major decisions made. Now they just lay off the managers and leave directors with literally over 40 direct reports and expect them to keep up. Years back, Nike was one of the best places in the country to work. They have fallen so far and its so disappointing but the worst is just the overall morale of those that are left. Cobra info getting sent out on accident (not due to more layoffs) and the first thing everybody feels is fear that they are all getting laid off later that week. What kind of sick twisted corporation wants its people to live and work feeling like that all the time. Everybody just waiting or anxious for the axe to fall.

I really hope that feedback like the OP’s gets to EH instead of all the “yes” woman and men on the ELT and external consultants’ BS.

Nike’s culture is dead and the rot permeates the leadership ranks. If EH (or his successor) wants to turn Nike around they have to get rid of the rotten apples, start to restore the culture and put good product in the marketplace. You are not going to turn Nike around with constant re-orgs, pretty PowerPoints and cost cutting alone. It’s going to be a long and slow process and unfortunately I don’t see any moves being made to indicate they understand what’s wrong. Time is ticking.

Anyone that is giving senior management (or management advice any level) a pass here… is either entirely naive, misinformed… or we have slt on the board (or all of the above).

Leadership can be measured by current x future business performance + current culture.

They literally make the decisions that shapes everything around you. Tired of working beyond your scope because your team is thin… thank management. Tired of having diminished psp… or no growth opportunities for your career… ties back to your managements decisioning. Or lack thereof.

Well leaders are people too and they’ve been reorged constantly. I have coworkers that went through 3-4 leaders almost every year for years now. Kind of hard to lead if you’re skipping around the block constantly. We also went through major reductions, 30-40% turnover in Covid so new people never even got a chance to see Nike culture. They created their own with not usual priorities during that timeframe either.
As for WFH, I don’t see how that affects anything as the team I work was a powerhouse through Covid. I mean we worked well together but we were extra efficient during Covid. Effective meetings instead of chatter, eating, walking everywhere and so on. Just knocking out projects left and right! Since returning to office, we have lost some of that momentum and it can be measured easily. We’ve gotten better but even our PMs have graphs of it.

EH should first get rid of all the talent that hired when RAT was at the HELM. By default all KOHLS and California resources should be fired immediately. Those resources are 40-50% more expensive than Portland based resources while delivering less value.

Our culture didn’t die by accident. It died the moment we started treating remote work as an entitlement instead of a privilege. Stop pinning this entirely on leadership (though they deserve some blame for lacking the conviction to end remote work outright).

The real issue is the employees who live minutes from the office yet refuse to show up. If you’re looking for accountability, start with the people choosing convenience over commitment, not the leaders.

Agree 100% …there is a major lack of accountability from employees as well as managers. And mangers do not manage with courage! Employees still WFH and literally nobody gives a cr-p!
