Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Take the severance and RUN!!!

Those who were impacted at the end of January, take the money and run as far away as possible from this place!!! A lot of non member contact employees are going to be doing the work of 3 people once this reorg is complete. Like the agile transformation 3 years ago and the massive failure that was, does anyone think this reorg will be any different.

@2af this was all set in motion last year when they cut bank severance from 12 months to 6 months (or 2 weeks per year with a max at 52). What happened back on January 28 was the first big hit in the bank, there will be 2 more rounds of mass layoffs this year, with a couple of 1 off’s sprinkled in.

All bank employees, do not think your job is safe, because it’s not IF it happens to you, but WHEN.

After more than a decade with the company, I was recently laid off. The layoff itself is not what bothers me, it is how the process was handled. Risk and Compliance originally operated under its own structure, but in December we were moved under Banking, which appears to have been done to reduce severance payouts when the layoffs happened. We are still being told we remain employed through April, yet we have no clarity on our bonuses. Considering that 2025 was one of the company’s most profitable years, this outcome feels especially disappointing.

@14s it’s very tough, I was impacted in June 2024, submitted over 100 applications and finally landed a job after 9 months. It’s remote with a requirement to go into the nearest office once a quarter for a week.

@14s I was impacted on 1/28 and just had a recruiter interview for Truist bank on Thursday, the job is in Atlanta, for the right salary I’ll be relocating.

Married with 2 kids, wife is remote with her job.

Curious, where is everyone going or applying to? Are you relocating for a new job? It is tough out there

I was impacted back in November ‘24. We got the 1 year severance. I was ready to go, but I was a bit nervous about finding a new job. Let me tell you, my professional life now is massively better. USAA underpays significantly. Leaders are subpar. And culture is a failure. Obviously it took me working for another company to realize this. Life after USAA is not the end, you’ll be much happier.

I was impacted on 1/29, was called at 8am by my AVP, told me they tried contacting me yesterday (1/28) and why didn’t I return the calls or answer when he called. Told him I was on PTO and driving back from Edinburg, and before I could finish, he cuts me off and says “well as you know, there have been talks of a reorg since late last year, and this is the first step in the process, I’m sorry to inform you, but your role has been eliminated in a cost cutting move.”

It’s almost funny, the AVP is new, he hit 1 year back in October, doesn’t know much of anything, late last year Mike Moran was grilling him and who do you think saved him for that? Me!
Dude knew jack squat about issue management or what was needed to close our high rated issue, so I had to jump in and explain why it was stuck and what is needed to fix it so we can have it closed by 12/19 (OCC related issue), yet I’m the one laid off.

Yeah, take the severance and RUN. This is the kind employer USAA is. THIS is considered constructive feedback:

"Avoid delaying priority requests for business partners or leadership, and
actively manage priorities and not delaying for days or weeks."

This can be stated in a performance review without a shred of evidence.
Not only this, but my manager has lied about job performance and project completion without regard to the fact that I have business stakeholders and tech leads who confirm completion. My manager has specifically targeted medical accommodation requests in my performance review, and targeted personal issues I disclosed in good-faith in case situations occurred where I had to leave work. Add to this, the associate vice president supports him 100%.

USAA is a toxic company with a toxic culture. STEER CLEAR and if you can get a chunk of change and run DO IT. This company, it's execs and most of the managers are absolute trash.

@hy you were assigned a consultant? I thought it was just those group tutorials run by LHH?

For those impacted, take advantage of the 3rd party resource provided to you for updating your resume. I definitely felt confident in my resume after working with the consultant I was as assigned. I know the market is tough, I was fortunate to land a job after applying for 1 job externally. And can say hearing from leaders at my current employer, resumes are all AI and it’s obvious; invest the time and the right company will invest in you!!

For all those impacted back on Jan 28/29, do NOT try to find another role internally unless it’s absolutely necessary, last thing you want is to land another job with a manager you don’t click with and it forces you to quit or get fired, thus losing out on that severance payout.

Been loving the severance + new job during the first year of new career under old bank severance package. Don’t get attached to the company. Secure your bag and run.
