Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

nothing wrong with pursuing a career you don’t LOVE

I’ve been in the insurance industry for 9 years.

Do I love insurance? No

Am I passionate about insurance? Not necessarily

But what I am passionate about is financial freedom and this is a great career path to achieving that.

People will tell you to chase your passion & there’s nothing wrong with doing that, but there’s also nothing wrong with pursuing a career you don’t LOVE to accomplish larger goals.

  1. 5 years with the company, 23 years Fire Cat Adjuster. I retired at 60.

If you can retire, I suggest you do it. I have no more stress. I miss the per diem money and traveling, though.

@8fkl not too bright are you, why do you think it takes so long to get ahold of your claim specialist, is it because we are properly staffed or because we need to hire more people to handle all of the work?

Doing the work of three? Three what? I would be happy if you actually did the work of one, then I would not have to reach out to your supervisor to have him get on you to give me a freaking call back after waiting two weeks. What a joke. Claims dept is ki-ling this company.

Remotes are not doing the work of 3. Once they get those hubs moving and your numbers dwindle, youre history. Everyone is replaceable.

“watch the latest Netflix show” … LOL! Who still has a Netflix account? If Hubs are the answer, why can’t the company stay fully staffed? Go back to yelling at the clouds while waiting for that next pension check. The rest of us Remotes are busy doing the work of 3 adjusters.

We love working from home. Being paid to play games on our phones and binge watch the latest Netflix show is great.

If you are in claims you will end up just like most of them living in an apartment in a nasty city like San Francisco renting after they sold their house living off the equity due to alcoholism, divorce, and alternative lifestyles. Believe me, SF is not the best place to work.

" A competitive salary
Competitive benefits
Decent working conditions
Opportunity for advancement "

State farm pays below median of what competitors pay.

Benefits are on par with industry at best so nothing special.

"Decent work conditions" hahahahah this must be a joke, claims reps always get antagonized and tortured with metrics and the ever fear of loosing their jobs.

"opportunity for advancements" seriously ? only if you know someone or you know something to blackmail someone will they consider you, if you try to advance via legitimate means you are not going anywhere, at best they will have you work above your pay grade but not promote you because they rather pay you less and hire someone off the street and pay them more than promote from inside, need proof? they just did salary adjustments but not to help current employees but because competitors pay way more and new hires would leave to other companies inside of a few weeks, they did it out of desperation and of course if you pay a new hire more than your veterans then they will also leave so they had to increase salaries but make no mistake the moment they perceive to have the upper hand they will not hesitate to go back to their ways, you are nothing to them , nay less than nothing just numbers.

Yep, 39 year agent here, could have gone out 5 years ago but the with 20% back to back premium increases ( and more on the way) frankly the money has gotten too good to walk, income goes up 75- 80k per year, phones do not ring to complain, I have never seen anything like it. I have a couple team members that run the show and make close to six figures themselves. I will milk it for another couple years and if things change drastically I will just say fk it.

@hpt.....recently retired agent, age 60. Did I love it? No. That's why I'm out at 60. Many years as a Claim Rep, then Underwriter. When Agency 2000 came along, I saw an opportunity to eventually make better money while getting screamed at a little less. It was NOT easy. Never travelled (with SF) --but the wife and I travelled when we wanted on our own terms, without being surrounded by people talking about how to trick more people into buying life insurance they didn't want. Been all over the world and done several bucket list trips. I worked my agency for nearly three decades-living on half and saving half. Stayed in my "starter home" because I loved it. And that's how I left at my own time, on my own terms. Now building my last home on a plot of land you wouldn't believe. After nearly 4 decades of plodding through a decent job that I didn't love.

The OP is spot on. We’re not selling TVs on the internet. Insurance matters.

“Pursue your passions” is utter garage and what people say who are starving artists or pursing some junk degree like a masters in theatre, racking up student debt, while waiting tables at Dennys.

People here complain about going into the office occasionally. Tell that to a lineman or electrician or plumber who work in less than ideal conditions. Think they are passionate about unclogging your toilet? No. They probably like using their hands and also making near or over 6 figures and providing for their families.

Work is supposed to be hard. Not toxic, but hard.

Most likely the point of view from agents, the right $$$$$ can make any job bearable.

And you can respect insurance. You can honestly believe that insurance does good in the world by making it more possible for people to recover from disasters. It's honorable work even if you're finding it a little boring.
