@gp that can’t be true. HR is not working on Christmas Day and IT would do a layoff on Christmas.

I agree they will withhold paychecks until you return your laptop, but let’s be honest here or no one will take any of these posts seriously.

I was laid off on Christmas Day. OpenText's Christmas present to me. I just got my last payment last week. Make sure you stay on top of property return. They didn't report my return until after my first severance payment. I had to send a couple of nasty grams and FedEx signature proofs to get them to fix the problem.

Different by country and it matters if WARN is applicable in the US.

The WARN Act (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) is a federal law designed to protect workers, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' advance notice of plant closings and mass layoffs.

The goal is to give you time to adjust, seek new employment, or enter retraining programs before your job officially ends.

Federal WARN Act Basics
For the federal law to apply, the following conditions typically must be met:
• Employer Size: Companies with 100 or more full-time employees (or 100+ employees who work a combined 4,000+ hours per week).
• Plant Closing: A shutdown of a single site of employment that results in job loss for 50 or more employees.
• Mass Layoff: A reduction in force that results in job loss at a single site for:
• At least 500 employees, OR
• 50–499 employees if they make up at least 33% of the employer's active workforce.
