Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

IT is impossible to work with at Chevron

I’ve been here for 3 years now. Software engineer. Came from a smaller company in a different industry.

Trying to build and deploy ANYTHING at this company is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever had to do. Getting access to do anything in Azure is frustrating creating resources in azure is frustrating deploying anything to prod in azure is frustrating and fails if you have a single character out of place. Playbooks are all over the place and impossible to find unless you know the secret phrase. I could deploy in less than 5 minutes at my last job, here I plan on it taking half a day.

We even started using power apps last year just to avoid the azure headaches even though I never wanted to consider it. It actually worked pretty well but apparently the power app lead left and now we have nobody who can answer our questions as we figure the platform out, so it’s back to square one.

Why does IT in Chevron make it so hard for developers to do anything? At least we got GitHub copilot. I just want to build sh-t and get it to our users. I’m already looking for the next job somewhere else that lets me do my work.

Did you see the news article about Oracle requesting thousands of H1B visas to replace the U.S. workforce?

Why stop at the CIOs? Look at the directors and GMs under this guy,@. these tu-d$ could not get their jobs at any other company, which means that we are all stuck with them. These people are not leaving a cushy gig.

Just look at the backgrounds of our previous 3 CIOs. They’re just not smart people, but they know how to BS with their business degrees.

Try working at Oracle. And waiting for the 6 AM message that 10,000 people got today.

That was my experience in Chevron IT as well - it was so practically impossible to deploy anything, there was no point building anything.

Oh well, you can’t expect an easy deployment process when they’re only spending a paltry $500,000,000 a year on Azure and infrastructure (no, that’s not an exaggeration)

@bq I already mentioned in the OP that I’m looking elsewhere and to answer the other question yes my last employer is publicly traded. SOX has nothing to do with what I’m talking about

@OP if you are young and in IT you need to get out before your skills dry up. IT in Houston will continue to be phased out in favor of ENGINE and low cost geographies. If you stay you will become unmarketable and miserable. Look for a medium to small company that does not insist on outsourcing everything. Houston will be an IT wasteland by 2030.

Amen, it is pure he-l working here as a Software Engineer. Absolutely no respect and hoops to go through at all times to get your job done. Les is an abysmal leader that should be fired immediately!

Was your last employer publicly traded? SOX complaince SUX! You are no longer streering a speed boat, it's an oceanliner called the Titanic. Seriously though, CIOs want us to adopt AI to develop faster, but it's still going to take a day to move your code to any environment for legit testing, a week for prod.
