Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

PIP

I have been recently put on PIP. And in my experience this is based on racism/ s-xism. I have worked for various managers in the company and never received a complaint or a negative feedback. How do I handle this? This job is very important for me.

@9ah Judging by the mass layoffs going on during the time this poster posted it's not performance related. They are just trying to find any way to PIP people during a bad economic market.

@OP Most PIPs are NOT due to the biases you mentioned, but performance in the current role. I hired someone who had been at Cigna for decades (her base salary was actually more than mine!) and I thought she'd be a good fit for my team. By the six month mark, I was encouraging her to look for opportunities more in line with her previous roles where she had been successful because she was in way over her head on my team. It happens. Unfortunately, she dug in her heels and became an unpleasant situation for everyone. I wound up firing her, but she was hired back in a role where she previously did well. Look at the roles you enjoyed and excelled at previously. Maybe there's an opening that will be a better fit for you.

As long as you don't get terminated for cause (ie. theft, as--ult, etc) and say you did the best you could do, you can still collect unemployment.

@pj This. And if you have good documentation you can file separately with EEOC if you don't trust how the process will go but good documentation should be enough if you can trust HR. HR can be a mixed bag but there are good people in every department.

Document everything. Put everything in writing. Raise the issues with your manager now. They will settle just to get rid of you. Which will likely happen anyway.

@f7 This advice is spot on. They are trying to find anyway to layoff now without severance and I believe PIPs will block you from severance but check on this.

It's obvious in this case especially given the last rounds of massive layoffs.

3 options:

  1. If you have documetation proof that the PIP is unfair - recent great reviews, knowlege of other minorities / women routinely getting PIPs from this person, then you may have a case, consult with an employment attorney. If no documentation or solid proof of discrimination exist, you will not win this.
  2. Update the resume, and get out ASAP.
  3. Follow the PIP to the letter and be perfect. Pray.

As Cigna is doing RIF you are gonna be toast next round, if you make it that far. The PIP will cost you severence and unemployment. They will fire you.

The fact that this PIP was a suprise and not a series of ongoing talks and corrections prior to it getting to this point, tells you all you need to know. A really bad manager. A bad culture, and a bad fit for you.

The PIP should come with very specific expectations.

Meet those expectations. Document that you met them - ask for feedback in writing on how you are doing, so you can demonstrate you've done exactly what was asked.

Don't give them other things to look at. Show up on time, show up to every meeting. Be flexible and show sincere effort in hitting your objectives.

@b8 Not really. Most managers I have met that gave a PIP did it by surprise to protect themselves and their cronies for sh-t they did.

I've been written up and even had a final warning as a contractor (mostly over attendance and exceeding WAH OP days) between 2017 and 2019 (I went thru a lot personally around that time and even nearly ended my own life at one point because of it). A couple years later I kept my nose clean, got life straightened out and got FTE'd.

@a7 d-mbest sh-t I have ever heard. It mean there were opportunities that need to be addressed. I have managed multiple employees in PIPs and they have developed and grown.

Many have promoted post the PIP.

PIP means, They have decided to fire you with out any package. Start searching a new job before the PIP Period expires.

its not you. especially after mass layoffs were now in crowd cronies people are protecting each other.

Worry more now on getting a new job. Sorry it’s come to this but 95% of PIP are just formalities and documentation to fire you. Please apply for jobs now
