Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Our future leaders are leaving

People I expected would be the next generation of leaders in IT are all leaving or appear to be planning their exits even if they appear to be in safe roles. I know some on here don’t care about IT but it’s going to continue to get worse as our best people leave for better options. 23 years with the company and moral has never been half as bad as it is now. Sad days for Chevron.

@r7 there’s one subtlety to your statement: whilst it’s true that the best people know their worth, and move to greener pastures (especially in IT), for some some BUs there are (were?) some brilliant people for whom there were few alternative options.

In my part of the world, Chevron pays above market rates, even compared to tech companies, but I always assumed it’s because it’s so utterly miserable here.

Leaving Chevron in these cases stops being about knowing one’s worth, and starts being about the calculus of weighing up pay and benefits, career growth, and fulfilment.

Should anyone really be takin’ IT leadership musings seriously from someone who can’t tell the difference between moral and morale? Now, it might not be very moral of me to rope this whole post just for a typo, and I reckon it might bruise @OP's morale, but here we are.

That said, I’ve got some doubts about his judgment on current or future IT “leaders.” He-l, I didn’t even know we had leaders in that bunch. Mediocre managers? Sure. Those are as common as mosquitoes in August.

And let’s be honest, the best folks don’t stick around forever just because there’s a pension danglin’ at the end like a carrot. Take a look at the real tech world. The best of the best ride on to better pastures. They don’t sit around twiddlin’ their thumbs, jawin’ on some faceless grievance board, or hang on just ‘cause the benefits are too comfy to leave.

What makes us great is what we build, deliver, and contribute, not warming a chair till retirement and callin’ it leadership.

Future Leaders = Current Executive's Children or Children's Spouses

Future Leaders: Because nothing says ‘meritocracy’ like the executive suite’s family tree.

they've either already left, or the good ones are getting moved out of IT and into other parts of the company in a last effort to retain some of them.

This is going to be controversial but I find the Buenos Aires and Engine IT workers to be way more efficient, harder working, and smarter than the domestic IT staff. It's not like the domestic staff was the best and brightest to begin with...

@OP Correct. No one cares about IT. Idk if you can truly call anyone in that division a "leader", no matter how competent they are.

@d2 that’s the point. Good smart people who should be leaders are leaving while we’re stuck with mo--ns and imbeciles at the top
