I suspect a co-worker to have a false PhD, and I have considered reaching out to the legitimate university to see if they have a record of this individual’s degree. I’m not going to confront this individual about it, but if I bring this to HR’s attention with or without solid evidence, could I be fired?

@bh This reminds me of that EMTEC ‘principal’ who genuinely believes he’s the chosen one. He never shuts up about himself. He once told this story about being in an AIChE session where the presenter messed up and supposedly the entire room turned to him as the ‘subject‑matter expert.’ Expecting him to comment on the presentation...
I was in that room. Not a single person knew who he was.

@122 thank you for typing white instead of whyte like so many people do on here. I doubt any white person got special treatment though. I always see DEI hires get special treatment in my area and it seems that white people are looked down on.
@110 It’s a problem at EMHC and around Houston in general too.
There’s tons of (white) guys in roles that don’t match their credentials and who keep failing upward. My guess is that you aren’t bothered by all the aggies with nonsense degrees running engineering orgs and making critical technical decisions.

@de if University of Phoenix doesn’t grant PhDs then there is definitely fraud claims going on as we have a well known high placed person who claims that she has a PHD from there.

@de they hire felons and people with DWI’s so nothing would surprise me. They hired someone in Carlsbad that mu---red their wife and then committed su----e less than a year after getting hired. Their standards aren’t what they used to be.

I have a master’s degree. I know how a university graduate program works. I know how easy it is to check if someone is trying to falsify PhD level credentials.
The OP and many of the comments here on the thread are just some old geezers who don’t like being told what to do by someone they don’t readily identify with. They can fix that by doing their actual jobs and/or retiring.

Most of the people on this thread don’t seem to have ever attended a college.
A PhD is an extremely difficult credential to falsify, and a very easy one to check. It is very unlikely that a company like EM hired somebody with falsified credentials at this level. This is just more whining and moaning from the same crusty old MFs who whine and moan about everything else.
@da Call me what you want, but think of it like this:
If you have the time to sit around and think about your colleagues credentials, and to run to HR to ask them to investigate their backgrounds, then you’re probably not busy enough to justify keeping on the payroll.
The real problem is that you people seem to have very little to do, so you dream up BS like this.

One of my former manager had some shady credentials. Came to Exxon with over inflated title in “business” and no skills. Treated all his reports like stepping stones for his next career move. Every one of his direct reports were PIP because he did zero to advocate for them.
I don’t believe people should be judged on whether they have a pHD or not. This degree is worthless these days unless it’s in really cutting edge research. In his case, I wonder if he even has an engineering degree. Glad I moved out to another department before I was harmed.
There’s many who were hired with false credentials. There was a pHD who told everyone she was developing strategy at former company. In reality, she was a clerk who was about to be fired before she fled to Exxon. I heard she got hired because of family connections. I know about her wirk history because I am friends with her former boss.
It had stayed quiet because I thought everyone should have a fair chance, but I now wished I blew the whistle. She stole my work and passed it on as her own and then wrecked it. I just don’t her subpar work link to me.
Does a University of Phoenix PhD count. Asking for a friend. Yes we have one from this illustrious university who loves to be called Dr.

It depends on your social credit score.
Many of our illustrious researchers and principals in emtec have never published anything. You have to do some digging to find them, otherwise you would never know they have a PhD. They carry themselves like Nobel laureates but nobody knows them outside of the company.
@b8 Kinda like the “principal engineer” who was sitting in Spring and had no engineering credentials? How about all the “sales engineers” running around Houston with BS degrees from BS schools? I guess you’re cool with this because a lot of them are white though.

It’s weird how y’all get mad at everyone except the people who are actually sending the jobs overseas.
Ethics hotline is worthless. I have personal experience reporting an individual who was taking bribes from a contractor and another who was stealing equipment. In both cases nothing was done.
I suspect there are many fraudulent education and work experience claims being made by those working at the BTC.

Third…It’s pretty easy to check if someone has a PhD. The structure and tone of your post makes me wonder if you’ve ever been to a college. If you had then you’d know how verify this.
Fourth…and this one is important…this is a nice way to end up in court.
If you don’t like having to report to or work with whomever this is…find another job or retire.
Can you find this person’s PhD thesis? Universities have websites for that. Consider your next step if not.
