Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

I want to axe a question about layoffs

How does Honeywell decide how many weeks of unemployment benefits do you git if they lay you off? I have nine months now since I joined Honeywell. So what would I git if I git let go?

Unemployment benefits are different than severance pay. Unemployment benefits are governed by the state. Each state has a different time limit for how long you can collect unemployment. There is usually a waiting period before you can start collecting. If and when your employment is terminated by layoff, wrongful termination, or the like, you can file a claim with the state to see if you qualify to collect. If you are approved, you must file each week. Please a note, you will likely have to prove that you performed a certain number of work search activities each week. You must keep these records. If you are audited, then you cannot prove that you did the required number of workers activities. They might be able to claw that payment back.

Severance pay is provided by your (previous) employer. At Honeywell, the minimum, I believe, is usually four weeks. Like somebody said above, you may be able to get additional pay based on how many extra years you worked over the minimum. Severance pay can be accompanied by a severance agreement where you may be required to sign away many of your NLRA rights. Based on a 2022 ruling by the NLRB, the way these severance agreements are worded has come under increased scrutiny. You cannot broadly waive your rights under the NLRB and they cannot interfere with concerted activity. Overly broad non-disparagement and confidentiality agreements have been rebuffed by the NLRB in recent years. If you are ever presented with a severance agreement, read it carefully. It may be of interest to contact a lawyer for better understanding. You can also contact the NLRB directly if you find that you’re a rights are being targeted. You do not need a lawyer to approach the NLRB. If your case has merit, they can work with you to address this.

If you ever got severance in the past, and rejoin Honeywell in a different role, they don’t pay you again for your total years of service. Your clock starts over with the 4 weeks.

Unemployment benefits are determined by local law. Severance benefits are a gift from the company in return for signing away certain rights and protections. In the US the company has no legal obligation to offer severance outside of union contracts or other pre existing employment contract terms.

It was four weeks for anyone less than four years of service, then it’s a week per year of service up to 26 weeks. Don’t know if that is universal or if it has changed, but such was the case in 2023.
