Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Re-orged is there any hope?

For anyone who has had this happen, how hard is it to get to another department/team? How long did it take? Was reorged today and not thrilled with where they put me.

No hope or strategy at Optum. Chaos at OI includes OFS and OT. unmitigated disaster crazy. Hearing rumors SD won't last the year and OI will dissolve into other parts. Optum AI was merged with OA and recently positioned as serving across the enterprise.

OH keeps shrinking because we don't "care" about patients and it's not the type of business with huge margins. ORX is under pressure.

UHC seems to be ok, but shrink to grow is misguided when we're more hated than the Axis of Evil. UHC people are being re-assigned from Blue to Orange which indicates prep for a major "back to basics" retrench reorg

@x9 Glad that worked out for your team. Our org was disbanded under a good second line manager (probably too exensive) and got moved to a clueless leader. It has been downhill ever since. Like night and day.

@dp this. My manger (team of 3) had just stopped showing up and all the mistakes for years came to a-head. She was allowed to stay but the team was disbanded. all 4 of us got re-orged. Wasn't bad. Still low man on the totem pole for cuts

It is common to transfer internally unless your role is very niche. As a hiring manager, internal candidates with positive performance reviews are more appealing.

Almost everyone I know who has been with this company more than 2-3 years has been reorged. Ignore the fearmongering that it's a step toward layoffs...Reorgs aren't playing chess, they are playing checkers. In some cases it's a sign that your old manager was underperforming and someone more influential snapped you up.

@dj this is actually a relief. Layoff would be a blessing compared to where they put me. I look forward to it.

Being re-orged to a new team is an indicator of instability. Typically you are an easier to decide trade off from your current manager to preserve what's left under that leader or to expand what that leader sees as better opportunities without you. For them, it's an opportunity to demonstrate flexibility and willingness to accept trade-offs to their higher level peers. As others mention, since you are probably one of the newer members of this re-org team, when decisions need to be made about who gets on a RIF list, you will likely be at the top. There is less personal, mental, and technical investment for your new manager to lose. I have also seen this as a set up to both RIF you and your new people manager who could be underperforming or seen lower priority than other teams/projects. Be wary of this as a temporary stop before you are eventually let go.

Got re-orged from small tiny team to a bigger one with a great manager so wasn't bad at all. Not sure if it was setup to fail but when those layoffs came and being on such a big team the axe fell on me and another I'd worry less about the re-org and more look around and see how big the team is because someone will fall the larger the team.

Typically but not always if you are reorganized to a different t team they want you to fail. So you are new and know less than the people that are there. Sometimes there are other people that go first who were doing poorly and you can take their spot if you catch on quickly. Don’t kid yourself it’s obvious you will struggle in a new role because people won’t want you to be more successful because their jobs are at risk.

I was part of a reorg last year. I went from having an amazing team, leadership, and role to one that felt chaotic, unorganized, and poorly managed. Several of us have applied for other roles but have not had any luck. We all try to have the mentality of being grateful to have a job…

Having worked for a competitor, just about every time they reorg'd, new teams were created as "great new opportunities" for the new teams. And then 1 year later, we were all laid off. Hoping that is not the case for you, unless you were hoping to get laid off.

I was reorged at the start of the year. I don't like the new leadership I fall under. I've applied to other teams but feel like things are frozen between other reorgs and maybe my job is a placeholder until they let the rest of us go. Not happy at all.
