Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Increased levels of fraud with ongoing RTO and layoffs

I get that many employees just don't care any more. Fraud at ATT used to be something you would hear about through the grapevine. Now employees put little effort into hiding it.

September 13th we went to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. I saw an ATT car in the parking lot and the woman driving was loading 4 children and some muddy digging tools and buckets. All of them were muddy from digging in the Park. Presses the boundaries of personal use.

A guy from another team sits near me boasting about using 6-8 full days each month for Caregiver time so they don't have to pay for childcare. Not working from home, just taking a free day and not logging it.

A guy on my team had hip surgery about 3 years ago. I've never seen him at work more than 3 days in a row in the past 2 years. Not gone to a medical appointment for a couple hours or working Remote, just out of office.

How is this possible? We've seen too many good people be let go. Are there no more checks and balances? Has anyone else noticed an increase fraudulent behavior?

@18s Cool story except there was no relocation money!

Meh. At least I didn’t buy high and sell low and cost the company a hundred billion. Mines chump change.

"It's obvious and in your face abuse going on right now"

Why is that fraud? Did the parent take care of their child?

I know someone who talked a friend into "renting" him a room so he could get RTO relocation money. He never actually moved in and just pocketed the money.

Two thirds of my team used caregiver from Christmas to New years since their kids had school off. It's obvious and in your face abuse going on right now.

Mind your own business unless these employees report to you. I always use all my caregiver hours

Oh no, workers misusing or misappropriating company resources? After we've consistently been treated so well?

The horror! 😱

@av I do way less now than I did before. Before I was afraid. Now I’m comfortable just checking the box swiping into the office and socializing. Nothing else matters.

"What company gets rid of people based on where they live? Not based on merit, talent or anything else."

Really?

It's called operating a business. Businesses cease operations in a City/County/State every week of the year. The reasons are many. The more fortunate are told the business still wants them if the employee would choose to work at Location B, there's a job there if it if you want it.

Your narrative isn't based on imperical evidence. Stop with the lying. No one is crying for you.

They are just using the opportunities available to them"

My take on it, OP was commenting on misuse, not valid use.

"Hows that fair?"

Why pick the battle with your teammates. They are just using the opportunities available to them. AT&T has a lot of other benefits that I will never use . . . mental health, attorney, for example. I don't begrudge those that do use those services.
I would prefer ATT stop subsidizing those services and give some of that money to me, but they won't. ATT wants to crow about how much they provide to their employees. It is amazing how much we are seeing on the internal TVs and emails about all the things ATT does for us. Stanks opinion is that we are just ignorant and don't know what they do. This way he can justify totaly ignoring the survey results. Of course, he unwittingly admitted that he made an error in communication. But the board would never hold him accountable for anything.

There were many who worked late nights, weekend works and everyday more than 8 hours, and company used fraudulent presence report justifying with video evidences and saying them freeloaders and fired them even they were delivering best. And later someone says their presence report is faulty. It was a biggest fraud to just show DOL that they are not doing layoff instead taking action under cobc.

@cw I don't know where it originated from but some of our teams were told something similar. Just the Atlanta based teams. Curious.

My AVP has a critical view of forced layoffs and the true purposes of RTO because so many aspects are beyond his control. He put this out as a cautionary warning for the wise. Actions have consequences beyond those you might immediately recognize under normal circumstances, and current circumstances are far from normal. Stay as far from the fringes as possible through the end of 2026. Protect yourselves because I may not be able to. I may not be able to protect myself this coming year.

The whole paid caregiver hours are so stupid.

That’s a lot of hours for people to use.

Some do, some don’t.

It’s creating an unfair balance between those who use it and those who don’t.

I get that they are our hours, but are they really?

They’re not personal or sick days. You’re supposed to use them for specific reasons, but is it being abused?

Yes, of course it is.

So what are we supposed to do? Watch our peers use 100% of pcgl while we use none?

Hows that fair?

What does the company vehicle use policy say? I frequently see kids in them on weekends.

This company is a joke. Just found out two new hires (in the past 3-4 months) are virtual. The whole RTO is utter bs. Changing of the guard. It has nothing to do with collaboration if you believe that go move to a hub and get terminated later.

Stories like the OP’s are often fabricated by HR to push their own agenda. Sooner or later, you’ll see “studies” based on smoke and mirrors claiming that RTO boosts efficiency — even though real research shows it’s not a factor at all. Other times, you’ll find HR staff posing as employees, spinning tales about sitting in the Costco parking lot just to sell their narrative.

We needed the RTO mandate. Let the paper trail of your daily activities show you are where you are supposed to be and doing what you are supposed to be doing. Been through many rounds of layoffs in 33 years. Somehow the riff-raff are always surprised when they get the tap on the shoulder. Talking sm--k one day, and begging for references the next. 2026 is going to be a good year.

Might as well take the time if they are giving it to you. You’re only a number. They want to make your life miserable give it on back. What company gets rid of people based on where they live? Not based on merit, talent or anything else. You live in the wrong city so uproot your life and move but oh,by the way that doesn’t mean you’ll have a job in a month. Just stupid. Get out while you can before they take everything else from you

If you use the word miscreants you’re probably over 60 and honestly your opinion doesn’t matter.

RTO is definitely the right call, and AT&T missed a strategic opportunity to cull miscreants from the herd during all the waves of layoffs. Hopefully they'll make a course correction during the coming year.

Settle down, Karen. Sounds like you’ve been spending just as much time watching others rather than doing your work.

And Caregiver time is for providing care - so that person isn’t doing anything against policy. Mind your business about disability guy, too. If you aren’t his doctor, you’re not in the know. It isn’t your job to police his paperwork.

Every time I am out for a doctor’s appointment, I am frankly getting sick of having to explain myself to those around me. There is such a thing as privacy related to one’s health matters - or maybe we don’t want to talk about it at work because it actually takes our mind off of continuous treatments and bills.

Sorry, not sorry. You are off base on these. Get back to work.

It is a market based culture. The “market” is international and essentially a kleptocracy where you are either the thief or the su---r. Loyalty and ethics are not part of the new normal.
