Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Surplussed (ATS/Legg)

My engineering team was already incredibly lean after various layoffs and departures over the last half a year. I was basically taking on 2 engineer's work and still got the notification today that I was surplussed despite great EOY performance reviews over the last several years. My manager said "it was not due to my performance" and it was "budget related" but honestly I am in shock and don't know what to believe.

I am off payroll in September, which means I have a few months to find a job --which isn't bad I guess. I am disappointed and angry that I have been cut while others around me who do less are still safe.

@dg

Nj warn act gets triggered by total count across the state so that count is not necessarily implying all were in Cumberland especially since the 2 nj humbs are not there. There were definitely middletown people effected just like the earlier listing which said bedminster.

@cp I'm wondering the same. It just showed up on the NJ WARN report - 138 employees in Cumberland county with a date of 9/15. Given the hubs (Middletown & Bedminster) aren't in Cumberland county, I don't have an idea of what roles that would affect.

Original poster, Are you in NJ? Assume the layoff triggered nj warn which is why you have to September?

I’ve never seen anyone in management get multiple month notice that they’re being surplus, typically it’s a few weeks, companies don’t want disgruntled employees hanging around that long. They may tell you it’s not performance based but your manager ranked all his employees and you were the one he chose, remember that, you don’t owe him any more loyalty.

If employees are fired for Budget cuts, the CEO should be fired for poor performance and tanking stock.

“ I am in shock and don't know what to believe.“

Well, believe this…your manager selected you to go over others.
So you should point blank ask him why that is. Though he probably won’t tell you.

You have the right to be upset about so many others doing less and getting paid. There’s so many in this company doing the bare minimum and they made it safely through this cut.
It’s because the leaders really don’t know how the business runs and they select by who they like. But there has been some talk about another surplus in Sept? Can that be right? why would it be so soon? Why wouldn’t they just have made this one bigger ?

You do not owe ATT anything.

Correct. Go ahead and take your Swingline and a few pens on the way out.

Could be you had too high a salary compared to others. No one is safe.

Ask your manager why he ranked you so low.

Wow you have until September? Thats so much time to be on payroll doing nothing but applying to other jobs while working from home and trying very hard to answer emails politely while giving absolutely no information back.

Most of the people on this wave are off payroll on July.

Often there is no real reasoning behind the cuts. Good luck on future endeavors. You do not owe ATT anything.
