Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AI projects

Believe I read that we have/had 40 projects in the pipeline. Any idea of the status and if any have been implemented? Looked at the Verizon board yesterday and the blood bath was scary. Will those projects cause the same thing here or will we continue with the slower Chinese water torture.

I am involved in some AI projects

  1. worry, the pace of AI developpement is insane
  2. don't worry, the T bureaucracy ensures the pace of implementation/approvals is stupidly low (presented as easy as Shark tank- reality - we're stuck, if any president reads this, get a report of the status of all AI initiatives and where they are in the approval stage)
    Implementing AI into critical infrastructure will not be same story like with Oracle or Amazon

I can tell you with absolute certainty, we do not have long. Within two years this company will only need about 50k employees.

I’ve been hearing the same thing for years.
We’re currently ~40 months into 6 months til Ai takes all developer jobs.

things can definitely change soon, but right now many companies are using AI to promote their stock and as an excuse to cut employees, just like they did with RTO — the difference is they’re not as stingy with the severance packages

I have been brought into a few AI projects. I'm not impressed at all.

Do a simple google search for "AI not paying off". You'll get tons of hits about companies dumping millions into AI and only seeing pennies of savings from it.

49,999 to be exact. You assume that AT&T will be at a point, with or without Drivenets, where AI will be functional enough within this organization to allow for a 50k HC reduction in 2 years? You're drinking the Jonestown Kool-aid leadership is passing out. I agree it will happen, but not in the timeline you expressed.

That doesn't preclude leadership cutting HC in half using other justifications, or flat out lying that we're further along with AI/ML than we are.

The people saying ai won’t eliminate jobs obviously are not on these projects.

Don't confuse AI with Automation. Sure, there are initiatives involving AI/ML, but it's being oversold by leadership while they attempt to stay relevant using the latest buzzwords. Their immediate objective is to automate as many people out of a job as quickly as they can. AI is inevitable, unfortunately. If you've been with the company for any length of time, you'd know that virtualization, sofware defined networking, and cloud architecture type initiatives have been going on for years. But, we have a horrible track record of successfully implementing applications, especially at the delusional scale and timelines that leadership is demanding. After every failed attempt, leadership doubles down..."If we just went faster. If we use Agile. If we throw more money at it. If we contract a 3rd party..." and so on. They're fickle and impatient, ever pivoting strategies, unable to see anything through b/c they're always chasing the next shiny object. There's a severe lack of a unified vision with too many competing agendas and personalities at the top trying to make a name for themselves. I'd love to see the company succeed, I just feel that until the dictatorship mentality subsides, until leadership starts practicing the "Win as One" philosophy they preach, and until this draconian environment that's been created dissolves, we're destined to perpetuate the insanity by repeating the same mistakes. Anyways, stepping off my soapbox.

Most are just bs imho. Wall st is starting to finally catch on to the hype. Most of it doesn’t work as expected. Sure it’s good to help write content or research something quicker, but other than that, haven’t seen it do much else.

An associate director was given an AI role , no one reports to them now after layoffs No one knows what the AI role is or what they are supposed to be doing ? How is this efficient, they even report to a level 2 with a level 3 salary ?????

Most of the ai projects are fluff and hype.
They’re stuffing it into everything to get attention, hype, funding, and experience.
Every dev wants to be on an ai project to throw it on a resume and jump ship.

It’s mostly hype, don’t worry about it.
