Subsidies are based on an individual’s income, are paid to the insurer, and are then reconciled with the individual’s taxes. If income is higher than predicted at the start of the year, then the individual may owe more on their taxes. If income is less, they may get a refund. The individual pays amounts outside the subsidy directly to the insurer. This article has a chart that shows how much subsidy aligns with percentage of income over the federal poverty level.

@tx how do ACA folks buy coverage? I thought they bought it directly through the ACA exchange...their monthly bills and money. So, if the feds are covering something...why not send that to folks directly instead of to ins companies. Give it to the people.
