Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

I thought job searching would ease my mind

Nope. It’s only made me feel more desperate. I’ve poured so much time and effort into the search, and I’m getting nothing back. Just crickets. What’s going on? I actually have a strong resume with specialized skills that are supposedly in demand, yet I haven’t been contacted once. If this is the reality, then we’re all totally sc--wed.

"Young d-mb and cheap is the secret sauce."'
That's not going to fix the 38 trillion in national debt
or the fact that china, india, and russia are all giving the US the middle finger.
Whatever the US is ain't working.

Training is not gonna fix the 40+ age problem. How about all those new computer scientists freshly minted and mountains of debt no job. Young d-mb and cheap is the secret sauce. Post office is hiring

@cp This. Train and upgrade yourself. Only that will ease your mind. Definitely not job search immediately after a layoff!! Knowledge is power.

It's tough.
And it will get worse!
Have a plan B.
Learn something new, even if it is temporary and it pays less. ANYTHING!
Dark years are ahead!
Wealth will be concentrated to few only. Those will manipulate people through pay/jobs like in some communist countries.

How old are you? Because if you’re 45 or older, you are toast. Companies are looking for 28-40 years old while paying low salary.

It's not the tariff situation at all. I've been looking at jobs for almost 2 years now because I knew this huge reorg was coming. The job market in US has cratered unless you're in a very highly specialized technical field such as AI, niche engineering. I am on the business side of things and you can get offers but they're few and far between. I applied for hundreds of jobs and got only like 3 interviews and a couple offers, lower than Chevron comp.
My SO in finance got laid off in 2022 and same problem tons of applications zero response. Finally got something at much lower pay.
The job market has fundamentally shifted and it;s been this way since at least 2021-2022. Offshoring is rampant. Americans are selling themselves out every single day. It's truly insane.

@a5 "India is hopeful that the U.S. will review the additional 25% tariff imposed on Indian goods as penalty for its Russian oil purchases, a government source told reporters on Wednesday." Tariff Chevron ENGINE services 75%.

With the current tariff situation, many companies are in a holding pattern, unsure how to move forward with their hiring.

If you haven't signed up for the company's benefits like LinkedIn Premium and other support services, I recommend doing so. Build up your network and check in with contacts to see if they can help. There was a recent Wall Street Journal article that describes how some people are spending over $10,000 on conducting a job search. It is tough. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/10000-job-search-the-wall-street-journal-ztage/

Do you know anyone else outside the company who can help put in a word for you? Reality is cold calling and mass applying online will be pretty ineffective.
