Sorry I didn't post this before more layoffs. While your manager is giving you the news, disconnect immediately from the internet. They can't scramble your laptop if they can't get to it. I was laid off on September 3rd. I've had access to my files all this time. I just got my box, so I'll go on the internet now and let them scramble it.

@cn I will just say if you had unbacked up personal files in the work laptop you did so under your own risk, as your employer had the authority to repossess it at any point of time. Also, if you got the invite to the "business update" call the night before or early in the morning you still had some time to clean up the laptop as there was little chance the meeting was to notify you about a raise or promotion. Bottom line, don't blame the employer for your own unpreparedness

Is it a crime? Most people do it. O didn’t say anything. How is that any of your business? Mind your own. Don't make it a big deal when nobody work at big tech think so
@bv tax forms, useful saves related to professional education, notes taken over years, code samples, project docs useful for resume and future interview preps.
Not to mention personal files, because it's not convenient to always switch between laptops at home.
Most people have at least a few persononal files that they'd like to get off.

Wow. Wish I had known. Was not only completely blindsided by being laid off, but to disconnect and shut my laptop off within minutes of a 2 minute call telling me I was being let go was just off the charts cold
