Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel as an Employer

You probably already know this, working there.

Since BK and ACT, Intel has been hyperfocused on getting more work for the same or less money. ACT, the layoff when no layoff was necessary was the give away, but there were other things, like the focus on H1B’s. I don’t need to tell you it’s destroying the company; first you focus on getting a labor force that can properly fulfill your task needs and then you work on containing costs, especially when your product is a fragile cash cow. But instead our leadership considers labor to be “the only cost we can cut”

LBT is 100% on this and I’m sure you figured out on your own it’s just going to get more and more miserable as time goes by. The only way you can resist is leaving (but they love attrition)

@e2 I am encouraging you to understand we could have asked Trump for a 20% or 30% stake but talent is no more expendable than fabs, not if you want to save the company

Vsp has been around since the 90,s at least. My wife and her co workers were begging for packages to be offered, she left in 2000 when I started and stayed til 2017. The downfall started after the dot com bust , granted it wasn’t bad all since then, as stock briefly got to high 50’s maybe 60. But they found a way to throw it all away once again.

LBT is doing what has to be done to save the company in the wake of PG overspending that bled the company of its cash reserves. Yeah these decisions hurt a lot but the company isn't making the money it used to make and the government won't let Intel sell off its cash losing fabs. Its IDM or bust and you can blame PG for that.

@b7
actually VSPs have been used for quite a long while at least since 2010 and perhaps even earlier then that..
they typically offerred VSP in order to free up headcount to expand into new market segments or businesses, or after they acquired a company and wanted people to leave..
Intel was never good at retraining people to take on newer work domains and just wanted people to leave so they could target hiring specific skillsets or demographics.. it's just the games they play.

@dg yeah other companies that prioritize saving on labor costs over doing their mission are destroying themselves too

@OP
I understand what you are getting at, but this is literally 99% of all companies in existence. They are not there for the employees benefit - they are there to make the shareholders / owners money. As much as possible. Employees are here to do what they are contractually obligated to do, nothing more.

If you don't like the contract, you can find a better one elsewhere.

@cg both products lines and process technologies take years to develop. Intel is behind on both areas. There will be no quick turn around if any turn around. It could easily be a long slow death similar to Eastman Kodak. People are still getting paychecks there so ride it out.

No one at the executive level for more than a decade actually knew or had a vision or truly wanted to actually fix the company. They just wanted money and left with golden parachutes. Their mind-voice is probably telling them that they’ve earned it because they’re better than the rank and file because they’re an executive (which is a joke btw if one were to dwell on that thought for long).
Not sure about LBT yet fully but because of his choice of CTO, I’m not so sure he is going to be able to do much to fix or improve Intel products.

ACT was all about freeing up headcount for diversity hiring. Entirely HR driven.

@a3 Intel started the practice of voluntary separation in 2016 and this is a significant reason for its downfall. They paid their talent a premium to leave. Layoffs should only be involuntary and management should be selecting the weak performers.

@aq @b1 at this point I don’t care who they are where they’re from or who they think should be President just so long as we’re not doing something stupid shoving our talent out the door

I was a lead during half of my 20-year tenure at Intel. Whenever a REQ opened up on my team I usually had at least one high performing green badge ready and eager to hit the ground running, but the company would only allow me to fill the position with a "diversity candidate." If you've ever worked at Intel then you know exactly what that means.

Intel rarely ever let me hire the people that could do the job, and I'd have to train them.

@ae including the antisemites who are doing mission critical work?

y’know it’s clumsy inattentive management to overhire to make sure the critical stuff gets done AND it’s clumsy inattentive management to just lay them all off and let God sort them off

There seems to be a theme here

The whole system is so corrupted, it takes a deep cut to have any chance of a cure.

But before ACT we had too many as sure as we can make defmet jokes to this very day. So we should have been able to cut.

What went wrong?
