Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

This year was exceptionally depressing

I was among the lucky few who actually had a great team. A few a--holes here and there, but otherwise solid, reliable colleagues. Somehow, we managed to overcome management’s shortcomings, make our tasks easier, and even have fun, or at least feel a sense of accomplishment. Yes, it was a cosmic accident, but it happened. I actually liked my work because of it.

Then the reorg came and destroyed the team. A few exceptionally competent and experienced teammates were let go, some were reassigned, and now my team is hollow and definitely less efficient and productive. The inability to recognize an excellent team says everything you need to know about leadership and management. I can only imagine the end result of reorg.

@ph Factory broke stuff. But also enabled some things. Then in 2020 Agile broke everything. This year, rather than backing up to a working state, MW doubled down on destroying any existing organization. And he’ll blame it on McKinsey if the shareholders complain.

@q5 ENGINE might end up like DOGE with a lot of grandiosity, falling far short of its goals, phony savings that do not remotely match reality, and many lives destroyed.

MW and MN will be well rested over the holidays, returning in the New Year ready to slash and burn some more. Just wait till it dawns on them that Engine isn't working as planned.

Three years ago I thought things could not get any worse when they implemented the factory model and made our teams completely inefficient... but then came Chevron this year, said "hold my beer" by ki-ling productivity and made a mess of this year-long reorg by adding only getting rid of people close to retirement, adding a few more people in middle management, and adding nonsensical things for us to do into our process.

I can't wait for 2026!

TSR is backward-looking BS. But... Morale and engagement are leading indicators of future TSR, because they shape productivity, innovation, precedes safety incidents and retention issues. There should be a culture-adjusted TSR” metric — a way to measure whether financial performance is being built on shaky ground or a resilient workforce. Tho Chevron gets a D+ on this metric to my knowledge maybe only a bit ahead of Exxon.

It feels surreal when leadership offers platitudes about taking a good rest over the holidays. My dear, is this something a holiday can fix? it is not long before the new year rolls in.

it's groundhog day where the repeated day keeps getting worse and worse and worse

Yes, this reorg deleted my team that was very efficient and productive. The inability of our leadership to recognize what's working and what isn't just lost at least 4 years of progress, it's groundhog day.
