Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Work Leads - benefits?

Do the new Work Leads get any benefits for their new role? I’ve heard they do more than before (we all do) but they supposedly have additions responsibilities. Do they get raises or something else? Seeing the pressure they have I wouldn’t want that job but wonder if Dell makes it worth it. They need to do much more because the managers all have 20++ people and no way can they be on top of all activities. NO WAY.

@c4 It's the nonsensical title given to a manager that has been demoted to an IC.

The fun part is that that they will do the same work (and maybe then some, as we all are) and keep the same salary. The company saves 0$, upsets the employees and nothing is going to be better. On the other hand that fits with the overall strategy.

As for the original question, the only benefit is that you'll get to keep your job. Responsibilities are the same, expectations are higher even if you grade is technically lower.

In some locations I'm sure benefits are even worse than they used to be.

All the ex manager work leads want to leave Dell, all the new 20 to 25 direct report managers can't keep up and want to leave Dell, all the remaining ICS that no longer have a direct and frequent audience with their leader, forced rto, sparse benefits and amenities want to leave Dell, and last but not least, many Dell customers want to leave Dell as Dell products are just commodities now and not the most value positioned. there are no longer any top engineers with space to create truly innovative designs, it's all hoping and praying the odms come up with something interesting. with large companies, the main leaders have a choice to invest in the longevity of the company, the people and the brand, for the long run or they focus on quick substantial money gains, we are now the latter. From here on out, all the groundbreaking things will be done by our odms or vendors, all the internal creativity, entrepreneurship, flexibility, has purposely been snuffed out. good luck, and if the odms decide to abandon the partnership and do their own, they can..

Responsibilities of a manager or senior manager as an IC.

It's a way to cut more costs and is a Bain special.

One of the big sites just wrote a puff piece article about it. "Work leaders" is the term and the expectation is they'll manage mostly AI agents and AI workflows and not people.

Two factors at play: companies need money for AI investments and for many that means OpEx because they're using cloud as their solution. The other is there is no ROI use cases for AI yet outside of people cost reduction, so Dell is going all in.

This is also why John Roese is the face of Dell right now and not Michael, they want our customers to think we're leading the charge into AI first work. That means we have to show we've cut labor costs.

The only way companies can sell AI ROI right now is labor reduction.

@c4 Work Leads used to be managers until they flattened the structure. Some managers now manage 20 people and are People Leaders. The rest are Workstream Leaders now. Same salary, busted down to Individual Contributors in title.
