Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why does AT&T continue to push their DEI agenda under a different name?

I had a one on one with my manager on Tuesday and he wanted me to make a verbal commitment to "foster the ideals of inclusiveness" in 2025. I asked him what that term means to him and he flipped it back by asking what it meant to me. I told him I needed him to clearly state what he was expecting of me. The meeting had an awkwardness because I am not a POC and he is. Without thinking clearly beforehand I added "better yet, let's put that in writing". Our one on one ended abruptly.

The only things I learned from AT&T's disastrous approach to DEI and Inclusiveness is there is more racism and favoritism in this company than I would have imagined possible, and it is NOT okay for a business pressure employees to support the social and political agendas of the business.

There are more white women and white men that are level 4 and above than any ethnic group. There is racism at AT&T. But it’s not towards white men. That’s for sure. Your boss was right. Everyone should feel included at AT&T but that is not the case.

These comments make me feel better about leaving this company and the racist a-s old white guys that work there. I spent 19 years dealing with “what about the white man” and “reverse racism” whining. Nobody is persecuting you mo--ns.

"Why all the complaining about DEI? No one has taken anything away from you. So many of you are terrified of someone advancing in their career when you've created the career rut you are in."

Opposition to DEI is the proof DEI is needed at AT&T

Imagine being a manager and POC who knows D.E.I. is dead but will not let it go.

So you take it upon yourself to ask for a verbal guarantee from your inferior (white) direct reports…,

Wow, thank god for Trump. This repugnant back door racism against white men is criminal.

DEI is Division Exclusion Incompetence. Just another form of reverse discrimination that is a failed agenda. Meritocracy is the only way to succeed

Ditto here. Seems it quieted down in Spring or early Summer 2024.

Yo, buddy. Give it a rest. US citizens have our own concerns just now.

It should be called Acceptance. In my country we are told AT&T wants us to come to US to make this company stronger. We are intelligent natural leaders where the average US employee has poor education and technical skills. We get Visa and come to the US only to learn AT&T struggles to educate their employees about our superiority. Each year AT&T brings more from my country because we are the keys to success in the future. This is fact that needs to be accepted by US employees.

"I've heard several comments about stealth efforts to keep DEI alive"

It is not a stealth effort. Many of us applaud the improvements previous DEI efforts have produced. The former minority is now the majority thanks to our leadership at AT&T. Learn your place and get comfortable in it. We will never go back.

OP, were you singled out for this talk? Why the verbal commitment but nothing in writing? Is your manager making an attempt to help you without leaving a potentially negative paper trail?

These posts are so d-mb. This company is ran by White men at the top and has been ran into the ground by them mind you. DEI talk is so d-mb what’s next you’ll be mad people get hired because they’re bilingual? There’s less people of color at the top now than ever before Sure they sprinkled a few blond women to save face. The only way the diversity numbers don’t look ridiculous is because of retail padding the stats. If you aren’t getting the promotion you think you deserve blame yourself. For every woman/person of color/“DEI Candidate” that’s the hiring manager there’s likely another 5-6 white males likely hiring for the same role and they didn’t hire you either. Perhaps you su-k and others are better than you.

“In reality I don’t give a rip what gender, s-xual orientation or color of your skin is. I value talent, skill and effectiveness over anything else. Best person for the job is all I care about.”

No one has any issue with this. But that is NOT what DEI is, it’s the opposite of that. It puts those elements above others. Equity is not equality. It is discrimination. You are lifting others up, while cutting others down. That is not equality. That is the problem. It is illegal and should not be tolerated.

Any company that has to have a DEI initiative is admitting that they are racist and they need to be reminded of it so that they don’t forget. DEI is nothing but a self-loathing white man creation designed to perpetuate hatred. My question to the supervisor would’ve been why wouldn’t you be inclusive? Who is he suggesting that you might exclude and why?

only people that have problems with DEI are the 10 percent of white guys that want to keep women and people of color down. Spreading propaganda and misinformation false flags.

Diversity is a strength, LOL! What’s a strength and what will propel the business is hiring the best candidate for the job based on merit, not hiring based skin color. DEI is racist and rotten at its core.

Take your manager's question as a warning and fix your character.

Should also note, it probably means someone complained about your as----e behavior.

Inclusiveness doesn't mean DEI you id--t. It means you talk too much and need to shut the fu-k up when someone else on your team is trying to talk.

People who dominate discussions detract from the team dynamic.

Take your manager's question as a warning and fix your character.

What’s wrong with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion? Why wouldn’t we want as diverse and inclusive a workforce as possible? Fundamentally, the concept makes sense, not just from the perspective of race or s-x, but age, mindset, school of thought, socioeconomic status, etc. So is the issue just how it’s being applied? I’m being sincere here.

"AT&T's disastrous approach to DEI and Inclusiveness"

Our team recognized the destructive potential of the divisiveness of DEI social manipulation early enough and rejected it to prevent it from tearing our team apart. Sadly, a couple of the ERG's do the real dirty work of DEI. As we learned of this we arrived at the acronym YBP, You're Being Played. Everyone accepted it with some humor. YBP saved our team from the evil of DEI. For the race baiters out there, our team is diverse.

I would have said sure, I’m inclusive of everyone using the same metrics when I evaluate the effectiveness of their performance and quality of work. I don’t give preferential treatment to any group over another. I value everyone’s input so long as it’s not d-mb.

But I’m sure what he really meant was, I’m only going to promote POCs over everyone else regardless of if I think someone else was more deserving, more qualified, or does a better job. Have to check those boxes. In reality I don’t give a rip what gender, s-xual orientation or color of your skin is. I value talent, skill and effectiveness over anything else. Best person for the job is all I care about.
