Internal positions being given to RIF people?

Are the internal positions given to RIF-ed employees over other internal candidates? I have applied to a handful of new internal postings in recent weeks but only a few days go by and I get the "we're going with another candidate" email. I am fully qualified for these positions so I have been surprised to not even get an interview. I also know some positions are posted and they already know who the position is going to but that can't be for every single one of these postings.
And yes, I know, why are you applying to internal positions, this company is terrible, blah, blah, blah but I am trying to get a different position/title to better position myself to move to a different company in the future if I see fit or becomes necessary.
Also note, these positions I am applying to are only 1 pay grade above where I am.

As a recent hiring manager, I can tell you we are asked to look at RIF employees as a priority. I can also tell you the amount of applicants we get to review is insane right now; it's simply not possible to go through everyone.

Maybe I should have been more clear. I have not been RIF'd, I am just an employee applying to internal positions.

Lots of ghost postings. Been news articles about this new trend with US companies, not unique to this company. It’s something like 4/10 job postings are ghosts. Meaning they are real companies but they are not hiring for that position. Why? News articles give various reasons, one major is to get a pipeline of candidates for future roles. Some it’s because they are using Visa workers so the posting is unrealistic. For example, our tech postings are now asking for 3+ years of scala … that is a very rare language used in large compute platforms (ie early big data). And then they also include needing 3+ years of java experience. My guess it’s for databricks but I am databricks certified with scala and commercial java experience and python certification. I get 100% rejections….ghost postings in my opinion.

I was rif’d a couple of years ago and found a position internally before my two week term date. It was one step lower in pay grade but a much better non- people leader role which I was happy for. I am currently in the same role and am enjoying it. Finding a position in the company after a RIF is not impossible.

Here is the deal. If you got RIFed that means you are not part of the cool club so you will never get picked. Since if you were part of the club you would have been voluntold this is your new job and spared the layoff process. Works this way at all large companies I have been at. If you are long in the tooth and have experience they want you gone since you cost too much and wont play the reindeer games. This redeploy smoke and mirrors is just a game. They gave you an opportunity to find something internal knowing it is never going to happen. They already know the people they are going to save which is not many that list is done before the layoff list is finalized. There is always a rare outlier to this but few and far between

@bs The problem there is that for external jobs you’re up against thousands of people rather than hundreds.

@bs You will have better luck looking outside this company.

Being RIFed and taking an internal position is like being served a sh*t sandwich. You would give up your severance to work for less money to stay with this company? There is better opportunities if you just look out there and have a mind east you will succeed.

@OP We were told to look for other positions if we wanted to so I applied to positions I was qualified for and I even did my résumé with chat AI program to boost my chances and nothing. I got the “we’re going with another applicant letter”. I reached out to the recruiter and asked her for some feedback and she said while my qualifications were quite impressive, they had very hard decisions to make and they went with another applicant. Turns out two of the applicants they just recently hired were from my team and they didn’t get RIF’d they were internal, but I was told to keep looking and apply within minutes of the job posting going out. There are hundreds of people applying for one position right now not sure if I’m gonna even bother applying here anymore I’m gonna start applying outside the company. I think I’m gonna have better luck. You’re gonna have to watch that job posting board like the Christmas Yule log and jump on every opportunity soon as it comes up. Good luck!

@ad The redeployment center/ process is a joke. It’s still do it yourself. I can do my own resume. They’re not very helpful.

@OP No, they’re not all going to RIF’d employees. I had 20 years with the company as of this year and couldn’t get an interview. I was well qualified for all the positions I applied for. The positions are probably already designated before they’re posted. It just confirmed for me it was time for me to go.

If you are RIFed, your application is flagged. However, with hundreds of candidates per role, you may get an interview, but few are ultimately hired. I did receive an interview before my last day for a position at the same pay grade, but I was asked to take a pay cut. I was not selected for the role.

We’ll get ready for the big disappointment because I knew people who have put in at least a 100 resumes and they were like really pro company, bright , energetic just to get the same emails you have recieved. Watched them become bitter and finally leave the company. Now they are happy.
