Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

Details…

When are the 15 min meeting notices put on your calendar? Morning of layoff day? Night before? Also, do they tell you when to go in the office to pack up your personal stuff? Do you have to give back home monitors? Would like some additional insights from someone who was impacted. Thx

If you are not in office the day it happens or if you are but dont pack up your desk you may not be notified when to get your stuff. I am sure it depends on your home location.

Just do a little work as possible and don't worry about it.

Maybe in this AI world it’ll be an AI bot giving us the layoff details, some amalgamation of “Up In the Air”

@fh My manager claims he knows nothing, but has heard the rumor too. They did validate they do have the ranking of all employees and that could be used without them knowing. I just can't believe we are going through this again. We had two RIFs already in IT in the 4th qtr and a NTW cut too. Jeff said in his AMA that there was no massive layoff coming, but do we believe him with so many others saying they have heard different. And they are hiring new people in IT also. None of this makes sense.

I guess the managers rank the team and submit it to higher ups. Depending on the number of people to cut, they select from the list.

So, managers might know how many will be cut, but they know who are the most likely to be cut.

@f4 I can only speak for my organization. Senior Managers and Managers did not have any advance notice or detailed information about which team members would be impacted for previous RIFs. We found out on the same day as the employees who were let go.

@b6 this was my experience as well. I had a 15 min calendar invite. My manager claimed they didn't know anything about the selection. At my new company, I told my manager about it and he laughed and said a manager always knows. I will never know the full truth.

@bq dir+ are delivering the news just like 2023. the fact that you don't know this means you are probably on the list

@bp stfu. Why should I do somebody else’s job of delivering the bad news when someone else decided for my team?

@bj pretty sure it's linked to your wages/tenure - the highest opex numbers on the spreadsheet gotta go

@bj what are you all talking about? Managers talk to their directors about their teams and personnel all year long. If your performance has su-ked all year you're on the list.

Very strange that managers are not involved in the process.

Directors dont have that much visibility into an IC’s performance except their annual review. How do they actually decide?

I am a Sr. Manager in systems/engineering. I have no idea who they picked for next week. I hope they don’t ask me to do the deed.

The people I know who were laid off got their meeting makers the morning of between 30 minutes-3 hours before the meeting. It depends on your role and how long you have had your equipment. Laptops have to be returned. If you are in office when it happens and you see the meeting pop up you may as well pack up your desk. If you don't someone else will do it for you and they let you know when to pick it up. I would recommend writing down your questions, take them with you, and make sure they answer them before you leave the meeting because different sites/teams can have different rules I'm sure.

@b4 I have the same thought....Can happen but would be bad for him to pic the "wrong" ones...specially if you will overload those that stay...

@b4 I was laid off in December. My manager didn’t know until after my VP had my “Org Update” meeting with me. She had no input and was shocked.

very hard to believe that Managers don’t know by now. Our director is new. He had to consult the manager to pick names, isn’t it?

I'm only one small fish in a very big pond, but I know next week is my team's week.

That said, as of right now:

  • I am a leader who will likely have to give bad news to team members on Tuesday
  • As of this moment, I have no idea who they are
  • There's every possibility that after letting team members Tue, I will be let go on Wed

All cards are being held close to the vest at the director level and above from where I sit.

I got mine in the middle of the night the night before. I got zero sleep I was so pi---d.

It was a 1:1 with a Director that was not my own.

A kind manager would do it shortly before the actual meeting since the minute someone sees it their anxiety level will likely spike.

Is the call 1:1 with HR / Manager or with all the folks they are part of layoff in the team? Also, is call in the morning or in afternoon.

Mine was about an hour before my meeting, which was about 30 minutes before my normal start time.

Meeting invite - Early morning same day.

Office - Of you are not in the office on Tuesday they will probably ask either to come escorted to pick up your stuff. Or they will ask someone to pack your stuff for you and you will come to the door to get your boxes.

Monitor- Depends on your boss for the monitors at home, probably they have enough monitors by laying off 10K people! 20K monitors too many!
