Got back a mixed review because one of my coworkers is mad that I stopped working nights and weekends. lol. i also need to step up my game in the creation of our team’s decks, because I seemingly can’t read my director’s mind well enough when given no direction. At least I have a good attitude!! F-ck this place all the way to he-l.

@24g this place is far too Director, VP and even manager heavy - and if Spark etc. can write all the performance evals, and emails, hardly seems like most are needed.

@kf my VP deliberately bases his reviews on the directors opinions because he is so out of the loop on everything lol. hence the mixed review

@1ve Is it necessary to have long term goals when your close to retirement? I wish we could say, my goal is simply to stay employed until I choose to retire. And you’re right, if you have years of knowledge and experience and because of that work I’d easier, why do you have to dream up ways to do something else? Like at 62 all the sudden my goal is gonna be RVP or something? So stupid. The problem is the manager can’t see your value and put you in a position to be a mentor or something similar. My husband is in a similar situation at his job. They want him to have some lofty goal when all he’s doing is working until he can collect decent social security. Why can’t the lets us fill the spots to do necessary work and let the young people have big goals?

Just got my evaluation, my boss was on another vacation so it was postponed.

So with over 20 years of experience in a wide variety of areas, 3 degrees to include a masters, 2 formal certifications, prior leadership experience to include several director positions, consultant experience and the ability to speak 2 languages, I was asked "what are your goals" - huh..WTH is left. Retirement I guess less than a year away.

I got another "meets" - and a suggestion, "you might want to consider having formalized goals beyond what is on the evaluation for next year, or you will never get exceeds" says the youngster who can't stack up their experience, education, and resume to mine.

My response - "Sounds good" and they wonder why we are all miserable. Just had to get this off my chest. 21 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Some thoughts:

  • The manager should know to not give a ton of weight to that critique. We have kids, significant others, and elders to spend time with and care for.

  • There was a town hall years ago where they advised us to deal with stress by hiring professional cleaners for our home, or something to that effect. That was just tone deaf and not helpful to people who may be financially struggling.

  • Something is going to have to give at some point. I think that the economy hasn't been great for a while now and it has helped this company push people to their limits. If things improve, people will try to see what else is out there.

  • The manager, if they were reasonable, should have a conversation with the person who made the complaint about how unreasonable it is to police another employee's personal time. I had to do something like that in a career at another company, and the person who made that kind of complaint was actually a low performer who did not meet expectations.

Self Preservation hint - when asked for feedback ignore the request if you can - if asked say you submitted it. If you must/feel you should do it - make it vanilla as possible. No specifics, no praise, nothing critical - bland and polite. But I would not do it and just say I did. Its not my problem if you can't find it.

As far as day to day performance, do what is meets standards and call it a day. Remember this is a deal - you pay me for meets, I give you meets. Deal is a Deal.

OMG. PowerPoint he-l. I can relate my PowerPoints were never good enough despite the fact that they looked pretty much identical to what everyone else was producing. Even though I asked what I need to fix the Director could never tell me. I swear they just have to nitpick over stuff that doesn’t matter. Luckily I don’t work on the stupid team anymore.

Yes, this is a very toxic work environment. I had a lead request 360 feedback from me for 2025 and I provided constructive feedback in my last response on the survey. Now he is trying to get payback against me on a project we are working on together. Thankfully, I am not that far from retirement age and can get out soon. I really feel for the younger workers that cannot find jobs elsewhere right now, but please, keep looking.

It has to be self preservation - like, i’m scared my job will be taken by someone younger than me. I’ve never seen a company so insistent on treating junior level staff so poorly. Hey Gail, this isn’t Mckinsey, even though you want it to be so bad
