Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How were the people selected for layoff?

There seems no clear answer to how people or groups were selected. Any inputs?

This was most certainly not performance based, at least not for my team. We lost a high performer while multiple leaching mouth breathers survived. Immediate management also was not consulted. List from provided to Sr. Director from above. Some very undeserving people got the boot.

Didn’t Russo get cut as well?

@bg
Hearing from a few people this was the case.

I saw people that were got leading and promoted go.

Cross functionality must have been another metric as well.

I think if you were not achieving then that's an easy pick. Everything else went into ai.

I’m a band 6 and I was let go yesterday. I’ve never had a negative performance review. My team was let go and our channel was already running very lean. I was told that I would need to transition my team’s work but there is no one to transition it to. I’ve been with the company almost 9 years.

@bs 50+ year old white people in a male dominated field? On average, who do you think makes the highest wages in that specific field?

I'm not saying it's fair or right. I'm just saying if the tendency is to pay every other demographic lower wages in that field, I have a guess as to why they were chosen.

Pay inequality problems go both ways. That's why we should discuss our wages.

One group in GNT that I am well familiar with lost about 10 and it seemed almost perfectly performance/skill based/ plus some with chronic HR type issues. If the goal was functioning with a lot less, they mostly picked the right ones. Many people were coasting for years

If you were white over 50 and in Engineering you got RIFd.

Out of a very small, high performing team, we lost 20%. It was decided by our Sr director and was mostly based on skills, criticality of production support, or redundancy of role. (Ie we don’t need 2 program managers, we’ll have to survive with 1).

@a2 We're these the same right leaning people who were throwing conspiracies up in slack? Just curious

The selection was conducted at the AVP level, leveraging Perplexity to analyze prior year-end performance reviews and benchmark each candidate against the broader group.

It was rank and ratings based on past performance with a look towards going forward with a smaller team. Unfortunately, rank and ratings, depending on the team, can be subjective. Combine that with the fact that most people being impacted hold a different view of how a team should be ranked and you get a lot of these reactions. Been through this and multiple others and I can say, no, it wasn't DEI (on either side of that equation)m it wasn't AI, it wasn't ageism or s-xism either.
For those impacted, deal with the grief and then get yourself together and start getting yourself ready for what's next. You can't change the outcome. Based on names I have seen, there is no age or group that was targeted, so just move on from that thinking and focus on moving forward. Get your resume updated. Upskill as much as you can to compete. Use everything they offer in the portal to get ahead. Don't let the grief of this make you the last person to get in the market and miss opportunities.

@ab DEI caused a lot of this. NO, you are wrong... we had two award winning fantastic employees that were outstanding get the boot. Those two were top of class and well respected by everyone on the region. Both white men in their 50's... gone because they are white, men and in there 50's. Both were SME's and both were lovely people. I am shocked they were let go and they will be greatly missed and I can say we ALL were shocked. Great people, GREAT men gone because of DEI.

I think it was a mix of utilization but also some ranking. I was laid off. Barely joined the company less than a year. One person got shuffled off to a new org because he did grunt work. Meanwhile his boss was laid off.
Regardless. It has happened. Only thing to do is to look forward.

Well, of you're not liked by your boss, of course they'd pick you.

That's on you. If your boss dislikes you and you don't have enough self respect to search for another job, the universe will eventually make the decision for you.

Band 6 here. It was performance based and low contributing members from our org. All the names made sense once I saw the list. Sorry if your leader was not fair to you but I can tell you there were some really tough ones so orgs can meet the numbers and no one could do anything about it

I genuinely believe AI sent over the list. A lot of good talent got impacted lol wtf is going on

For anyone to say it was DEI when you look across the board at the amount of Women and POC that were impacted is absolutely ignorant.

A system of "rate and rank" was used. I can assure you that it was based on your recent performance review ratings for the last 2 years and how your leader viewed your overall talent which of course is subjective.

The people at the top are enriching themselves and their friends and some of you are still blaming DEI. Wake TF up! Corporate Greed has ended with 13000 people unemployed for the holidays

@a3 exactly this, if you are yes-sir to AD/Sr.Dir and not use own brain for which they pay you, then age does not matter. You will be in forever, or else you are cut now, or you are their future quota. Simple !
This is most cases, some are indeed good but that is very rare boss in vz.

"R***o said they [the cuts?] would be surgical. They most certainly were not." - @a5

Sometimes, when cutting out a cancerous tumor that's parasitically feeding off its host and doing its benefactor's longevity harm, you cut out the surrounding tissue as well, in case it's mutiny has spread to the less uppity cells.

@a3 You're a stand-up person, a person of dignity, integrity.
May your traits be rewarded going forward, and may you find a place where honest input is valued rather than considered threatening to those in HR.

It wasnt rankings for damn sure.

The way they gutted gnt and now combining regions is going to make for an amazing sp experience. Not sure how delightful the customer experience sp spends their whole day driving.

Rf is in a bad spot too. Deployments are supposed to increase not sure how that happens.

Snap is now pushed out.

Russo said they would be surgical. They most certainly were not.

Combined regions are going to have bring back nearly everyone as contractors in the summer.

We had 11 managers let go today myself included. All of which were not favored by the director. My department is very clicky and if you’re not friends with the director you are history. It couldn’t have been more obvious.

Lots of favoritism. I know of a certain Director who chose right-leaning people, and saved all his DEI colleagues.
