It is 4.5% in my state, so they are only offering 12 weeks. :-(

@10r After doing some google fu, the consensus is that the UE rate would have to rise above 6% for extended benefits to be offered. The current U3 rate is 4.3% and has been rising. A lot can happen in the next six months, but I doubt it will reach 6%.

@xk I have been watching some job bloggers on youtube. Most are saying that the corporate job market is abysmal right now, across industries. Seeing the same on glassdoor. This seems to be a really bad time to be laid off. If this persists will UE benefits be extended? I think the unemployment rate would have to get a lot higher for that to happen. We'll see.

@wr | Tech work not worth the pain

I would add that working for corporate America in general is a pain. It's not just techies who are getting the ax.

@wp My understanding is that you shouldn't file a claim while under "garden leave" but until you have actually been terminated. Many state agencies say that it takes 4 to 5 weeks before you get your first payment, though in my case was about 3 weeks. You do need to "check in" every week, even before your claim has been approved and it can be done online. During this check in you will be asked if you found a job, got paid, etc. You will also have to report where and how you looked for a job and where you applied for a job (they ask for at least 5 a week in my state). You will also need to upload a copy of you signed agreement (to not sue O) and when you do get the severance payment you will have to report it in the weekly check in.

In my case all the dominoes quickly fell into place: sign agreement, return laptop and other stuff, get severance, get first UE payment.

Also, for some reason, if you take a 401K distribution now it will affect your UE payments.

Some UE websites have a weekly benefit calculator. Some states are more generous than others.

Another tidbit: in some states collecting social security does not affect your UE benefits.

Good luck out there.

Time to leave tech. Tech work not worth the pain anymore if you want to have a sane life.

@wf thank you. So if I understand correctly RIF employees can immediately file for unemployment when RIF? If this is the case everyone needs to be taking advantage of this additional money available to them when RIF'd.

@wa In most (if not all) states if you have to sign away your right to sue for wrongful termination to get "severance" then it has no impact on when you can start collecting unemployment.

Best wishes.

Does anyone know if we are able to draw unemployment after our RIF package timeframe is over? States KS and MO.

@bd Start Day trading - paper trading first (most brokers offer this), become profitable by following just one or two patterns and then see if you can trade with real money. This is one skill you could develop even while working...then do it full time after layoff. No point in trying to get back to tech if you are not a superstar.

@OP Appears our dear "leaders" are picking on the locations with the weakest labor laws first.

Not many layoffs happened (so far) in Europe.

So glad I left that dump 4 years ago. Worst experience of my life. Horrible people managing. People who have no morals or guts. Tons of back stabbing. Tons of BS jobs that can be done by a teenager. The real problem with oracle has and is their mgmt. managers directors and SVP’s all just trash humans. They know it. Most incompetent bunch of clowns I ever came across. Now on my 23rd year in tech and it’s very easy to tell people who earned their stripes vs people who painted their own on. Never forget id10t director when a networking questions came up. “Dat’s ya’ll job…not mine….ya’ll get that.” She was their boss!!!! Absolute clown show.

The overall job market is really shrinking..
Plenty of work still for home service techs, security, janitorial, food service, waste disposal, hospitality to just to name a few options
