Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoffs and Contractors

Make this make sense.

We lay off people by requiring them to move to a Hub city at their own expense and reapply for their job (or they are declared surplus/laid off). Then, a year later, they are back as a contractor, and RTO doesn’t apply to contractors.

If it is so darn important to have everyone in an office, why aren’t we ALL in the office? Why doesn’t AT&T thrust their own employees, but is happy to let a third party person have access to the same systems and networks remotely full time?

Because moving to another town didn’t get rid of you. Att doesn’t want Ftes. They want vp’s and contractors. Control freaks and megalomaniacs are like that.

@ba
Yep... exceptions are everywhere and it's bullsh-t. Take a look in Korte's org. Staff roles have non-critical managers working from home for decades. They are even in out-of-footprint states.

@cr You have to quit, wait 6 months, then just hope that your manager will fight to get you brought back in as a contractor. I know multiple people that have done it, but there's no guarantee.

@c3. I have an elder parent that needs me home now.
What company will allow me to contractor at home? I’m willing to give up AT&T benefits and bring my background of decades to continue helping customers, and revenue.

"Relax Francis. They’re not employees. They don’t have to play by the same rules."

Which just proves the point that the reasons that we were told to RTO were all lies.

"SVP/CISO Rich Baich has an apartment or condo in Dallas, but he hasn’t sold his primary residence in Charlotte, North Carolina."

And Baich just announced that they are hiring 200 new positions in Charlotte.

RTO = Soft layoff, control, micromanagement, slavery, no freedom, no trust

Cingular actually did this as well.

You're right. It makes no sense. But RTO is built on lies, so why would it make sense? At this point, you put up with it to get the paycheck, or you leave.

Stinkey, oops, Stankey, is a little man that has to make himself feel like he's a "big boy CEO" by having maximum control, and only feels like he gets that by making everyone that isn't kissing his a$$ as miserable as possible.

@bb get your own healthcare and invest and save for your own retirement.

I think you are referring to a 1099 worker, I am a contractor and have healthcare and 401k with my company. They match 80% upto 6% just like AT&T did before they got rid of the pension and went to a 7% match on a 6% contribution.

@b9 get your own healthcare and invest and save for your own retirement. That’s fine. Contractors are over compensated a lot more than an employee for the same work because of this fact. Since 85% of the company is over 35 this shouldn’t be a problem

if you want no insurance or retirement, you are more than welcome to go be a contractor. You can WFH and figure out your own benefits.

Fair trade off.

@b3 maybe so, but it completely destroys the argument of “collaboration” when nearly half the workforce who’s engaged on all the same day to day work isn’t around. Make it make sense for me. RTO 5 days unless you’re a contractor, then don’t RTO at all. How do we collaborate then?

Ah, the guy always angry about contractors not having to RTO returns.

Relax Francis. They’re not employees. They don’t have to play by the same rules.

RTO gutted the company. The intended purpose is misery and self attrition. There is no real work related reason. They know you can perform your duties the same from home or the office, just like we all did for decades before Covid.

I’ll tell you what else makes sense … Legg NOT in Dallas, Baich hiring in his own office location in Charlotte. And I still know plenty of ppl who are virtual while I had to make the decision to leave after 24 years. It’s a F U to us all.
