Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

Grow Up!

Yes, last week su-ked. And like you, I’m nervous about what’s to come. But let’s not kid ourselves or rewrite history. When the pandemic hit, this company didn’t toss us aside while the economy melted down. We kept our jobs. Some of us even got cash bonuses for basically existing. The same leadership you’re busy demonizing today signed off on that. Funny how that part gets left out.

Now it’s fashionable to cry about the CEO’s salary. Really? You likely knew this was a multi-billion-dollar health insurer with a millionaire CEO at the helm when you accepted your job offer - or when you CHOSE to keep working here week after week. Just like it doesn’t stop you from filling your cart with garbage on Amazon, or ordering overpriced coffee from Starbucks - who, by the way, laid off 900 people last week. Yet, I doubt anyone is forfeiting their Starbucks Rewards in protest. Outrage when it’s convenient isn’t principle, it’s hypocrisy. If empty outrage paid the bills, many in this forum would also be millionaires by now.

And here’s the part nobody likes to admit: nobody is chained to a desk here. The front doors aren’t locked. The exit signs glow for a reason. If this company or corporate America offends your conscience so badly, go build your own empire. Put your brilliance to work. But don’t pretend that bi--hing and moaning are unique skillsets. They aren’t. Babies are born crying. Sadly, some toddlers never grow out of it – then get jobs at this company.

The reality is simple. This company has tens of thousands of employees. Only a handful were let go, it seems. If every single chronic complainer in this forum quit tomorrow, the company would replace them and keep moving. No strategy would collapse. No customer would notice. The machine doesn’t need you (or me) - or anything you have to offer - to keep turning. You are not special. Whining here for validation from other whiny anonymous nonspecials is just sad. And if that feels harsh, it’s because deep down, you already know it’s true.

My heart goes out to anyone whose job was impacted and anyone still worrying - especially those who looked here for answers only to wade through the rantings of people who shouldn’t be part of this workforce, or any other. Good luck!

@dw

Flippin' hilarious that someone who posted this

"This company does has benefits to off their employees that aren’t done anymore"

has the gall to criticize anyone for "word salad" 😆

@OP This was good and another view point that most miss. My grandpa use to say you don’t have to work. You get to work. Job security is an illusion. This company does has benefits to off their employees that aren’t done anymore like Pensions and work from home full and flex opportunities. They give bonuses and yearly API They pay for a portion of college tuition. I don’t necessarily agree with all management practices at HCSC but I have opportunities to apply out if I don’t like the politics in a department. Pay is pretty good. The only reason I get on this site is because the head of HCSC doesn’t communicate with their employees. Mostly Maurice’s emails are just Word salad and skirts around the blunt questions asked by employees. Some of the comments here were helpful in giving insight to these layoffs but most were just rants of a few bitter employees who will never be happy where ever they are.

@OP Many of us have spent decades building our careers here. We remember when this place had purpose, vision and even pride. Watching it unravel has been infuriating, so yeah, laid off or not, people are going to vent. And honestly, it’s probably one of the few healthy responses left.

But if reading that kind of frustration bothers you this much, maybe this board isn’t for you. No one’s forcing you to stick around. Seriously, just move on. Problem solved.

@ba ….this is a site about layoffs. Do people on here not think? You’re like “why is everyone talking about layoffs and so upset”…..people lost their job and are on a forum about layoffs.

How will I ever be able to compete against you as a bootlicker, when you've got a years long head start?

@OP people like you are the reason the rich get richer and we are all stuck looking for new jobs and never moving up in companies. People like you, who justify layoffs and pretend salary discrepancies between upper leadership and the people who run the company is just “business as usual”, are the reason companies get away with this. “Grow up”? How about you grow a brain and think critically for once in your life?

Most people here are over reacting. Ya'll
Need therapy. Layoffs happen, move on. If you are really good at your job, I'm sure you will have no trouble landing a job elsewhere. When this company hired you, you weren't promised a job for life. Unfortunately, this is how corporate America works. Stop whining. Up skill and be prepared for worst case scenario.

Well said! It's sad to see how many have victim's mentality but glad to know there are still some level headed people working for this company. Don't let these comments get to you.

@OP You feel better now after licking that corporate shoe? Now try to give that speech to the worker who busted his or her butt all year to all of a sudden get summarily fired and having to figure out how to make ends meet for their family. I’m sure the CEO and the board thank you for your staunch defense as they pop another bottle of champagne and book their next vacation.

@OP You act as if HCSC had an option about employing staff during the pandemic. They NEEDED staff to run the company. You think and act like a ten year old having a tantrum.

That you Bow Tie Bojangles???

You are cruel , inept, condescending, and likely the person in every department that everyone hates. You are the oxygen su-king elitism who shares zero concern for his coworkers but virtue signals on social media.

Take a seat in the back Bow tie worshipper.

your attempt to reframe concern, criticism, or even grief as immaturity is both condescending and dishonest.

You say we shouldn’t “rewrite history,” so let’s not. HCSC did keep people employed during the pandemic, and that’s commendable. But keeping employees during a once-in-a-century crisis isn’t generosity. It’s the bare minimum for a company in an industry that profited from that crisis. People didn’t “get cash bonuses for existing”. They kept the company afloat during a global emergency. Don’t trivialize that.

As for the CEO’s salary: no one’s shocked that a CEO is wealthy. What is frustrating is watching record executive compensation grow while employees face job insecurity, impossible workloads, and now layoffs. Pointing out that this happens at Starbucks or Amazon doesn’t justify it. it just proves how widespread the problem is. That’s not a defense. That’s systemic rot.

You mention that “no one is chained to a desk,” and “the exit signs glow for a reason.” Yes, people can leave. But telling unhappy employees to “just quit” is lazy and ignores how adult responsibilities work. People have mortgages, kids, health concerns. They’re not staying because they love being mistreated, they stay because they’re trying to survive.

And this idea that “the machine doesn’t need you”? That may be true for any one person, but it’s also the very mindset that creates toxic, soulless workplaces. It’s why morale sinks, innovation dies, and companies lose talent. If people didn’t matter, you wouldn’t need to spend so much time trying to silence them.

Finally, you try to sound tough and wise, but it’s mostly just bitterness masquerading as insight. Criticism doesn’t make someone a toddler. Speaking up doesn’t make someone a whiner. And telling people they “aren’t special” says more about how you feel than about anyone else.

If you’re really worried about how this place moves forward, maybe stop scolding the people still trying to care, and start asking why so many of them are speaking out in the first place.
