Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Corp badge in/out

At the end of February, each department at corporate will have detailed Attendance data for their staff. Every employee will fall into one of many buckets;

In office but less than 4x week
low time, meets 4x week but less than six hours in the office on multiple days
No time- Which is never in the office. This is to verify the “exceptions”

Get your resumes ready because there will be a wave of disciplinary cuts as a result of this.

@OP What happened with this attendance report? Did it actually go out to each department?

I wonder how much slack will be given for the recent snow days? Is there another round of cuts coming?

Soooo Framingham closed tomorrow. Still have to be in 4 days or do we get a “pass” this week. Inquiring minds want to know.

@2e7 are you kidding me??? You must also not have children or anyone you want to be present for. For years I have been able to successfully do my job, while also attending my kids sports games in the late afternoon. When a company trusts their employees, it all works out. I feel that trust is being lost here. And I know, leave you’ll say. But why, when it’s been proven to work for so many!

@2e0 you know where the door is. Maybe you can get mothers/fathers hours to ensure you are home when your family needs it.

@ak Gosh, I really hope you’re not a manager 😅 You seriously think people should be laid off over clock-watching? Most corporate employees are salaried professionals. Since when does being a professional require micromanaging how many hours someone’s badge is in a building?

@11z I’m assuming you don’t have children, right? For working parents, work–life balance is incredibly important. Just because something “used to be the norm” doesn’t mean it actually worked well for families. Many of us already make significant sacrifices for this company, and having flexibility is what makes us more willing — and able — to continue giving our best.
If coming into the office works for you, that’s great. But different people have different responsibilities and realities. At the end of the day, everyone is still doing their jobs, regardless of where they’re working from. Live and let live.

I’m so annoyed by this. For years, many of us were following the 3 days in office, flexing when we needed to, and getting it done. Because of so many that didn’t, it ruined it for us all. Now here we are, 4 days in office. And here I am, following the policy, 4 full days in office, watching other departments just carry on as before. No accountability, no manager making them adhere. Sigh.

It’s their way of cleaning house with the least impact to the corporate bottom line. Profit over people all the time!

Bottom line is that WFH and flexible hours have worked since COVID began (and even before that for many). We got used to being home for our kids or picking them up. As long as you are getting your job done who cares? Staples feels that the need to control us will help productivity and sales, but being in the office isn't going to do that. It needs to be decided at a department level, not one size fits all.

It used to be the norm that you had to find childcare or a nanny for when your kids got out of school. Not that it was a good situation, but why do folks now think they shouldn't have to do that and should be able to.just leave work when it's convenient??

@ak does the time at home count when I respond to a few emails before my commute? What if I'm on a call from the entire ride to work, does that count? Your attitude is old school and it just doesn’t work in today’s working world.

To all that remain at Staples, there are other options out there that respect your work/life balance alot more than staples does. There are many local companies that are growing vs dying (a slow death) like staples.

All the best!

@ak Picking up kids from school is not assumed as an ok break from being at the office Been here over 20 years I had to put my kids in an after school program so I could work a full day. That hasn’t changed

@b7 each employee is allowed 2 bio breaks a day. Any additional bio breaks will need a doctors note

I’m a long time employee who has many friends around the company.

The directors and VP’s may voice their disapproval but they will be on the chopping block if their staff has too many offenses.

Just because your Mgr/Director/VP gives you approval means nothing. You guys can get your one way ticket to the unemployment line together.

@ak but….what if I have to go to the restroom? Does that count toward my 6-7 hours?

@ak incorrect. “We don’t have core business hours” and “you shouldn’t be watching the clock” I believe was the messaging from RH when 4 days was announced. No messaging on number of hours required in office. All this is doing is hurting working parents who’s kids start school at 7-8am and end at 2-3pm.

Well if you’re in 4 days and not for at least 7-8 hours you should get laid off! Unless your job literally requires you to leave the buildings. The over 7 hours thing has been the RTO rule for over a year.
