Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Don't relocate for Dell

I learned the hard way that relocation doesn’t mean job security. I uprooted my life, sold my home, and then I got laid off a few months later. It’s cruel, honestly. Dell acted like moving was a sign of commitment, but apparently that commitment only goes one way.

Never relocate for any company or job unless you have an employment contract.

That's just plain wrong. What a lousy company. The worst I ever worked for(2012-2019). Best companies I worked for were HP and SUN. HP offered me a package like that in the mid90s and I would have been so upset if they had laid me off after moving. You're CEO is a lousy piece of cr-p. He never cared for his employees whatsoever. Never visited our site - not once.

@n7 I've had similar experiences and I feel the same way overall as you.

Why on earth would someone relocate in the current economic/business climate? It's no promise of job security.

And there are numerous additional reasons that relocation isn't always a good idea as well...

For homeowners in certain areas, do they think we're giving up desirable mortgage rates on houses that have since appreciated in value by 50-75% since we bought them?

Just to buy houses in a potentially inflated market at a worse rate? No way I'm doing that.

Do they think none of us have family obligations, or spouses (who may earn more than we do at Dell) rooting us to a given area?

Personally, all of that stuff matters to me 1000x more than my loyalty to a company, and my local job market is actually better for my skill set than any location that Dell has a big office...why would I ever consider relocating for them?

So if I got laid off (which I did), I could just grab another job at a bigger company than Dell, to do more interesting work for comparable pay with better career growth (which I did).

In short....if you choose to not play these stupid power games with these awful companies, they really have no sway over you.

Just stop buying into it, put your foot down and be loyal to only yourself and your loved ones...not to a corporate behemoth that barely regards you as a sentient, sapient being with a life outside of work.

I would not relocate for any company just for the sake of the company ever! In recent years Meta was pushing me to consider relocation which I flatly rejected and being tired with their incessant requests asked their recruiters to stop considering me for any positions at their company.

@ds - he's an I9 making $200k+ annually. I don't feel bad. Also, i9 is typically the terminal grade at Dell. No promotions from there anyway.

All these HR policies are totally bullsh*t. Higher-ups use them for their own purpose. I know a remote employee who got promoted this year from an IC to a senior manager. Not a competent IC then, and not a competent senior manager now. One can only suspect that the promotion was based on personal relationship.

Man...This PSA is nice and all, but you're a ginormous rube for not seeing that written on the walls in bright red boxy letters the moment you started even considering that bullsh-t. Dell has been laying people off for years now and you thinking that moving for this company would factor into that decision making makes you a real dingus.

I'm really sorry this happened to you, but you only have yourself to blame for this.

  • Signed, a remote employee who refused to move and is still employed

UNLESS a company will FULLY help relocate you financially, you should never ever EVER relocate for that exact reason. Especially if you have kids.

My parents neighbors for example, he worked for Boeing and they wanted him to relocate some place out of state. I'm assuming for a promotion... Boeing bought them a new house in the new state, paid for ALL of the shipping/moving costs and then took care of selling their old house.

So they were financially invested in him. The house was sold in like a month or less but, they spent zero money on relocating and they had no kids, either.

There is a guy on my team who lives in CO and there is no office anywhere near him. He is full remote however, because of this he can't ever get a promotion so he is stuck at his current level UNLESS they relocate. This guy is the backbone of our team/org. I'm sure he makes good money as he's an i9 but like, he'd have NO issues finding a new job if push came to shove.

He'd also never uproot his entire family to move near a Dell office, either. Especially with the way dell has been for the last 6 years... Constant layoffs, job security is less than secure more often than not. Promotions have been MIA for years, raises have been as minimal as possible... What incentive does a remote person even have to move near an office at this point?

Dell is a degenerate company

Despicable. Then again, these days, how would anyone move for a company that has been continuously laying people off for about 5 years.

3 members of my team moved so they could closer to the office when RTO started (we were told that we had to be in 5x per week even if we are farther than an hour away). 3 of the 4 we lost in the first round of layoffs were the ones that moved. Gets even worse when you realize the homes they moved into are more expensive than the ones they moved out of.

Until you eat, bathe, or breath. I could literally wipe off the pathogens stuck to my face after a short walk.

no offense but why the he-l would you relocate for dell?

there is nothing dell can offer that would make them a long term play. But to bet the family on Dell???!
