Thread regarding Fidelity National Information Services Inc. layoffs

Global Payments/TSYS

If you have any questions about GP/TSYS feel free to ask here.
Every town hall we’ve had this year they’ve given strict direction to NOT speak to anyone from FIS regarding the Global Payments/TSYS Issuing divestiture.
We also went through a massive McKinsey overhaul all year and what a disaster it has been. RIFs around every corner and most of us have had the same anxiety about “when will it be my turn” all year. The guy who was leading that effort from McKinsey is now the CTO of GP real interesting how that worked out…
We are not hiring stateside anymore, it’s either India which also seems rare these days, or Phillipines.

FIS has not had any success in India with COBOL based systems, when I see Philippines that tells me just like the rest of our core legacy apps this too is moving to the Philippines once you’re one of us. No US colleges teach it anymore which is sad since the majority of all financial systems run on it, we’re less than 10 years from the retirement of the last cobol programers and they, not only FIS, have a plan…..unless of course they are teaching AI to do it, full replacement of living breathing intelligence.

Two separate agencies have approached me for an alleged contract-to-hire opportunity at TSYS, which I am not pursuing because I was aware of the FIS acquisition of TSYS and neither agency could provide satisfactory answers to my questions.

Both agencies provided me with identical job descriptions, which I speculate were provided by TSYS. After reading the Team Dynamics, I speculate that FIS is going to inherit some headaches.

The job description is as follows:

Must-Have Skills
· C
· Cobol
· HP Non-stop(Tandem)

Overview:
We are seeking experienced software engineers with strong expertise in C and COBOL to support and enhance our credit card issuing and authorization platform. This legacy system plays a critical role in transaction processing and requires hands-on maintenance, bug fixing, and occasional new development. The ideal candidates will be proactive, collaborative, and open to introducing modern development best practices into a mature codebase.
Platform Overview:
· HP Non-Stop (formerly Tandem): Handles transaction authorizations and processing
o Languages: C and COBOL
· Windows Application:
o Languages: C# (some Java)
o Database: Microsoft SQL Server
Team Dynamics:
· The current team is strong on the Windows application side and does not require support there.
· Limited internal expertise in C and COBOL; existing team is piecing together knowledge post-departure of original SMEs.
· Two underperforming resources with COBOL knowledge are available for knowledge transfer.
· Looking to onboard two senior-level engineers (L3 and L4) to take ownership of the HP Non-Stop side of the application.
Responsibilities:
· Learn and understand the legacy C and COBOL codebase
· Collaborate with existing COBOL resources for knowledge transfer
· Maintain and enhance the HP Non-Stop platform
· Perform bug fixes and support production issues
· Contribute to limited new development efforts
· Introduce and apply modern development practices to legacy code where feasible
Must-Have Qualifications:
· Strong experience in C programming
· Solid knowledge of COBOL
· Preference for candidates stronger in C if not equally proficient in both
· Ability to work independently and take initiative in a legacy environment
· Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
Nice-to-Haves:
· Experience with HP Non-Stop systems
· Familiarity with financial transaction processing
· Exposure to modernization efforts in legacy systems

What are your opinions?

I've been with FIS for 75 years. India is what makes FIS special. It's a key ingredient of success that makes our customers go "wow!"

@bc I mean, to what end though... As an American dev always having to explain how to code and more... to hired devs who say they don't even know the languages or frameworks we're using...

Does anyone know if any offices will come across with TSYS? FIS closed most of their more regional offices, which leaves staff exposed who are now two states away from their nearest.. Also in UK/EU?

Because they can hire like three of them to replace one US employee.

@b1 Indians are the ones who build and test. Americans are the ones who speak to the clients and lead the team of Indians.
